Real talk - widescreen display

I'm curious to hear personal feedback on the new widescreen display. I really like the feeling of a traditional cockpit layout with essentials either in analog or digital displayed in their own purpose built area. The additional screen for other car functions like nav etc. off to the side or in the center console works well too. This, to me, has always given a sense of integration with the car. Aesthetically it pleases my brain. My 991.2 does this extremely well.

Those who have the new wide screen - and understand what I mean above lol, does the new screen remove some of that from the driving experience? The wide screen is no doubt full of gadgets and neat electronic wizardry. But is it too much? Especially sitting almost as an after thought in the cockpit?

Sorry if I lost anyone here. I have an LCI M4 on order and, well, am wondering.

Lot of personal preference here but I prefer the iD7 screen set up. I often turn off the center screen….

But, while I think the large screen looks tacked on, it wouldn’t keep me from buying an iD8 car.

In pictures I thought it looked a bit odd and bolted on. After having the car for a couple months and driving it, it’s a seamless experience. From the drivers seat it looks really integrated and the dash displays placed well. I love the infotainment side and can’t imagine going back honestly. My only real gripe is the HUD and unnecessary blue bar it puts behind the data. you can get rid of it by changing the M mode to sport, but that disables a bunch of stuff including cruise control. I wish I could just get rid of the blue bar that serves no purpose.

You'll forget about the screen when the car pins you to your seat when you're accelerating, then when you open google maps on the bigass screen you'll be glad you got the new one.

Strongly dislike it because there's no physical HVAC controls makes it very annoying

Much prefer id7

Are the temp/fan etc controls always displayed on the screen for easy adjusting? Or do you have to fumble thru a couple screens to get to them.

always displayed temp adjustment. just touch to adjust. then there is an always displayed climate link that when you touch will open the full settings screen. I will also say that the climate settings on this car are much more intelligent, including the heated seats. The car does a much better job of automating everything to keep it completely comfortable at all times. With remote start, it’s smart enough to only turn on the heated seats if it’s cold outside and the car warms up very quickly before I get it in. This is my 3rd BMW and I’m very impressed with the climate control. So far I never really need to adjust anything. Set and forget, including heated seats.

Thanks this is good info. This will be my 7th BMW (2nd M car - I had an F82 for years) but first with this level of digital overload.

I have both , ID7 in X3m and ID8 in M2. At first I was in ID7> ID8 camp , solely to due to the lack of physical buttons. But as ive driven the m2 more , ive started to realize how little I actually use those buttons. For the most part you get in , set your temp and thats it. Im not constantly adjusting the temp and fan speed. Also the settings for temp are overlayed at the bottom of the screen so they are always available for adjustment. I think I prefer ID8, the screen resolution is better, the graphics are sharper, the HUD is also a lot better. if you are coming from an ID7 It just takes a few drives to get used to and you're all good.

Prefered the physical climate controls that were iDrive 7 but am getting used to the single screen.

My wife's G05 X5 50i has ID7. I don't drive it too often but find it to be decent with most things easily operable. That thing is a beast though and I'm usually too distracted by the V8 sound and acceleration to pay attention to the displays lol. She had an F15 X5 prior and there was a bit of a learning curve between the two. I'm sure it's similar going from ID7 to ID8. Thanks for the response!

I have id8 for both the x7 LCI and M3 CX . I have been given loaners with the ID7 and they truly feel outdated. My personal preference.

I personally wouldn’t own a G8X with ID7. What others said about the temp control is true and annoying though.

i mainly adjust heated seats so it's always gotta fumble through the menu

id7: i keep eyes on the road and instinctively press the heated seat button without looking to turn it on

id8: look at the screen. hit climate control. wait 2 seconds. climate menu opens up. hit the heated seat up button twice. then i have to hit climate control again to get back to navigation. total takes 10 seconds of me not focusing on the road and 4 button presses versus 0 second distraction and 1 button press

very dangerous

“New”? It’s been out for ages.

I love it, no way I would have bought an iDrive 7 car when I was shopping M3s early last year.

I was heavily in the camp of wanting the previous ID7 cockpit and more buttons. Timing wasn’t right to order a new M3 until recently and was hesitant at first about even ordering a ‘24 model. I quickly became less annoyed with the display and now simply enjoy driving the car. Spend a minute setting your ideal temp, pick your audio source (radio, CarPlay or exhaust) and then just drive the car!! You will get accustomed to and appreciate the large display.

It’s the same 3 presses that I would do on my 340, but the heated seat button was much lower on the dash taking my eyes off the road even further.

I would consider just putting the heated seat on 3 or 4 and leaving it there. Unlike previous generation cars, it wont turn on above a certain temp. Set it and forget it. Older BMWs the seat heat would come on and run regardless of the outside temp. On the M3 it will only come on when the seats are cold and then shut off and stay off when the interior is warm. It’s much more intelligent. I’ve been leaving mine on 4. And if they are on, it shows the icon next to the temp setting thats always on the display and you can press that if you want. But I’ve noticed they just dont come on when its 60+ outside unless you have them turned on 5.

I absolutely love my wide screen display. The level of usability and convenience is perfect. I do believe that BMW is striking the right balance of software and physical buttons in the G80. If they were to move the seat controls to software, I think they would go too far and it would become more of a distraction. Android Auto works chuffing magic! I never have to touch my phone while driving - a huge improvement for me.

Edit: I also have an E90 335i track car which is several generations behind with its lack of navigation, screens and analog gauges. I never cared for iDrive in older BMWs. With the iDrive8, BMW has finally made it worth it.

I thought I was going to hate it. I ordered the car January 2022, but got it August 2023, so the model year changed by time I got an allocation.
I actually love it from the cockpit looking out over it without the cowl sticking up there. I concluded I actually like it "tacked on", as some would say, because if anything does go wrong it is an easy swap instead of pulling the dash apart and the squeaks and rattles you would get from doing that.
I actually cringe at the iD7 layout now. Would not of thought that before getting the car.
