SITUATION
Functional noises (squealing/honking) when braking shortly before the vehicle comes to a stop

CAUSE
Material-specific properties of the brake components

INFORMATION
“M” vehicles are designed for high-performance, spirited driving. To accommodate this type of driving profile, a braking
system which exceeds the standards for handling heavy brake forces, extreme temperatures, and excellent stopping
power at high speeds is required. “M” vehicles can be ordered with the optional ultra high-performance braking system,
featuring perforated carbon ceramic brake discs designed for circumstances similar to those encountered on
racetracks. The carbon ceramic brakes were designed to improve braking efficiency, and dramatically increase braking
performance along with a significant reduction in weight. When developing the carbon ceramic brake system, the main
focus was on braking performance for the sporty-minded driver, while accepting the comfort limitations of functional
noises at slower speeds and when coming to a stop.

Please inform the customer that the carbon ceramic brake system’s functional noises (squealing/honking), are a known
characteristic for this type of material, and are only a small trade-off for the improved braking performance. These
functional noises have no effect on the performance, operational reliability and durability of the brakes.
Part replacement will not provide a remedy for the noise; this is a known characteristic of the high-performance brake
system.
More information on the performance and operation of these brakes can be found in the Owner’s Manual under “M
carbon ceramic brake.”

Probably because that's how it works. Brakes work, at a physical level, by converting the kinetic energy in the drivetrain to a non-movement form of energy. They use friction on the rotors to convert the energy to various other forms to remove it. One of the main forms of energy transfer is heat, which is the obvious one. Noise and squeals are another form of energy transfer and they're completely expected for high performance breaks. The non-CCBs stock pads also squeal. Track focused versions of EBCs and iSweeps also squeal, worse when they're cold.

They are fine hot. It’s only in traffic or urban stop light to stop light.

I’ve bedded them in countless times and they stay quiet for a day or two. IMO BMW needs to install different pads for street driving. These pads are definitely designed for track use. How often does that happen?
Unfortunately, this isn't what I've been experiencing. For the most part, the CCB's have been quieter than the steel brakes on my last M3. My problem is a knocking noise coming from the rear passenger side when driving over damaged or poirly maintained roads. I first thought it was suspension related but after two trips to the dealership they couldn't find where it was coming from. I finally realized it is very likely the brake pads knocking around since slight pressure on the brake pedal makes it stop. I brought it back to the dealership again and explained this to them only to be told it's normal for CCB's to make some noise. Well, not this noise. When I bring it back in for it's break in I'm going to push for pad and/or bracket replacement.

I experience this exact thing on the CSL. Please keep us posted on the findings.

Have you brought yours into the dealership for it yet? Just curious if they've given you the standard feedback on brake noise.

No, I think the probability for resolution is low as it seems like an artifact of the design and have no time to waste with the dealer only to say that CCBs are noisy by nature. Next week I’ll lift it up and track it down with a rubber dead blow. Will post my findings and ideas to limit rattle.

My CCB's on my Aventador are as quiet as a church mouse. I don't understand why BMW (which has a very large R and D department too) can't figure it out?

This might not be the 100% answer.. but my speaker wire rattled up and down on bumpy-ish roads. Check your trunk and put a piece of foam to stop the wire from tapping on the metal. Worked for me.

I had a similar issue on my '16 340i. I stuffed some old shop towels up there to see if the noise would go away, which it did. I totally meant to change the old towels out for some foam or something and promptly forgot about it. That car was bought by someone on the East coast and I wonder every once in a while if they ever found my old towels...

I'm take a look at this but I'm almost certain it's not the issue in my case. Mostly because I can make the noise stop with slight brake pressure over the same areas.

Just because an SIB can apply to your car does not mean you go in and ask for it. It is like a knowledge board. Customer has same issue/symptom as described, then you can perform a known fix. You don’t just go into dealer saying “perform all TSB’s” (they will laugh at you, trust me). I would say don’t chase issues they don’t exist or you’ll never be happy.

Porsche Brake Squeal Explained

Agreed, street pads would be worth looking at if you can't stand the squeal. I've been looking for different pads for less dust and squeal for moderate street driving.

Thanks for posting these! Anything lately regarding a squealing noise when cold start in cold weather? For the belt tensioner and idler pulley?

I might have seen older ones talking about this issue. But I’m not sure. I’ll definitely look and if it matches your concerns, you’ll be the first to know 😉

Appreciate it! Over on another thread about the cold start squeal, we are all discussing it. Someone posted their BMW Tech's video and the tech mentioned there was a "measure" in place that instructed to replace the belt tensioner and idler pulley if this noise is present

Where’s the one for DME calibration needing fine tuning for “idle catch” on MT6 cars BMW? 😂 It’s either that or janky spark plug gapping on some cars from the factory.
