Dealer Owned Warranty
Does anyone have experience with DOWC (Dealer Owned Warranty) for extending a warranty on a new vehicle? Just bought a X5 50e and was interested in the BMW extended coverage, but the dealer offered this for supposedly less ($5350 for 8 years 100k mi). Curious if anyone else has had positive or negative experiences with it? Seems like they offer similar coverage.

I don’t have any experience. But I’d consider putting $5000 into a high-yield savings account instead. If you need to make a repair, you have your own funds ready to go. If you don’t, you just began saving for your next car.

I would ask if it covers battery replacement. Most likely the “e” battery will need replacement before the end of 8 years. Also ask what the replacement cost is of the “e” battery. You know the 12 v battery wont last 8 years.

I asked my service advisor about these kinds of aftermarket warranties when I bought my used M8 (not from that dealer).
He told me they are all basically pretty good and that you should always get the highest level plan and he gave me a list of things to make sure is covered (unfortunately, I can't remember all the things). One of the big things I remember is coverage for the infotainment system. When I get home I'll see if I can find the list of things and I'll post it. |

To answer the original question. I can’t imagine a circumstance where I would put my trust in a Dealer Owned Warranty, which I presume is 100% supported by the financial stability and the decision making of covered repairs of the selling dealer.

They're all insurance policies technically. Fidelity offers a good one.
That said, with the issues the 50e has, I wouldn't bother with it, as the odds are you won't want to keep it past 3 years |
