M xDrive in June 2021

Below is the excerpt from the US Press Release on M xDrive. Reads like this will be the same technology/drive train introduced on F90 M5. Remains to be seen if the third "2WD" setting completely decouples the front axle and sends 100% of the torque to the rear wheels (as "claimed" on the M5)

"The rear-biased system will distribute torque between the front and rear axles via an electronically controlled multi-plate clutch. An Active M differential takes care of torque distribution at the rear axle. Torque will be directed to the rear wheels during normal driving, providing the classic rear-wheel drive experience. Only when additional traction is required will torque be sent to the front axle.

Both the M xDrive and Active M differential are connected directly to the Dynamic Stability Control System ensuring quicker responses in improving agility and controlling both understeer and oversteer.

The M xDrive system will offer the drive a choice of three modes: 4WD – the default setting with rear-wheel biased torque distribution focused on traction and precisely controlled handling. 4WD Sport – directs greater percentage of torque to the rear during dynamic driving and is designed to work particularly well on track environments. 2WD – requires DCS to be turned off and affords experienced drivers a pure rear-wheel drive experience without any system intervention."

Gross.

I'm going to go buy something with more taste, like a 1996 rust colored celica with a veilside bodykit, or a store-brand microwave dinner of mashed potatoes.

This is so far up and away from the bmw of the late 90s and 2000s that I loved so much. You guys can say what you want, but even the F8X was a beautiful car that chassis wise was an updated E92 M combined the best of the of S54 and N54 engines (high redline and twin turbos) with a mechanical and fun DCT. This is just crap. It's ugly, it's laden with an automatic box, and it's so half-hearted and boy racer. Where is the classiness and Teutonic aura we loved about BMW? I'm sure it'll be fast, but the BMW I knew and loved is dead. And it died when Albert Biermann left.

RIP BMW M. It was a great ride, thank you for all the great years of producing some of the best cars for car enthusiasts world wide.

Ugh. The M3 was supposed to be my next car and now I can't find an angle of the car I like. Forget the grills and that dead horse. The smaller wheels up front, weird body lines and accents, bulbous bumper on the rear, etc. the only shot that isn't bad is the dead on rear. But even that isn't all that good either. So many good points have been made in this thread and I feel like BMW has to know this isn't good. The interior I can get on board with. It's a nice evolution and has some cool tech, but I would never do a look back on this thing after parking.

A nice e46 m3 is looking better and better every day. Maybe a Toyota for a daily.... <gasp>

I showed two women pics of the new cars while at dinner tonight. One of them, a 5-Series owner, said the new cars looked "mean" and she loved IoMG. The other, a CTS-V driver, said she'd get the M3 if she were in the market for a new car. She liked the overall shape better than the M4. Both are attorneys and neither are on car forums.

2021+ RS5 is looking more and more appealing to me now. Too bad, was hoping to get into my first True M, but this is questioning that decision.

Some one posted this a while ago. I think there's potential for a big market. Even though I don't like the connected grills, this is a huge improvement.

If people were interested in the G8x but can't stand the front end, knowing this aftermarket bumper is available will definitely push them over the edge.

So, it's a little lighter than an X3M/C and the drag coefficient is a little lower...I don't see how it improves much on that car's 16 mpg mixed rating. Now, why do you care if you're buying this car? You likely don't...but 15.6 gallons ain't gonna go far...especially on the track. Heck, if it hits 20 mpg, you might be able to go 300 highway miles on a tank. WTF? Porsche offers a larger tank at 23+ gallons in the 911, why can't BMW?

The 911's trunk is much smaller (132 liters instead of the G80's 368 liters). You can add a 50 gallon auxiliary tank to the trunk and still have more space than the 911.

The drag coefficient quoted also doesn't include the frontal area (they quoted Cd instead of CdA). I expect better aerodynamics because the frontal area of the M3 is simply not as large as the X3 M.

Do you think this will be a 6 figure MSRP when the competition model is optioned out?

M3 looks surprisingly good. Even with that grille. But M4 looks pretty bad. Doesn't even look like a BMW.

Just like the F8x generation, the rear of the M3 looks better than the M4 IMO.

This just looks... hefty. Like it's sagging in the middle from being overweight or something.

Much better
