G80 confessions from a Porschephile
Featured on BIMMERPOST.com The spec: 6 speed manual Tanzanite Blue II on Full Kyalami Orange Premium Pack, Black 826Ms Shadowline Headlights CF interior trim and Full Leather. To say I am impressed would be the understatement of the year for me. I am sad that I almost limited myself to not purchasing it based only on initial internet pictures. My first M was a Jerez Black E90 M3 in 6 speed manual with Fox Red interior. Truly loved that car to bits. Loved the playful, high energy nature of the car. Went into the F87 OG and Comp chassis a few years later, cars that I really enjoyed pushing and tracking as well. First impressions: I only have 85 kms on this car so take my impressions with a grain of salt. 1. This is the first time I truly enjoy spending time inside a BMW cabin...the overall feeling of quality of materials is omnipresent. The distance between gear shift, steering wheel and pedals is spot-on. This is something that has always stuck with me with Porsche and has really been nailed on this new G8x chassis. 2. The suspension team deserves an award. I live in Ontario which arguably has some of the most beat up roads in North America. You can thank our nordic winters for that. The ride is really firm, sporty but very composed. It soaks up bumps very well. The rebound of the travel itself is properly dialed in. 3. Last but not least, the overall presence. The last new car I owned that gathered this much attention was my F-Type in 2015 and my 911 C4S after I modified it. I dropped by my buddy's house and a ton of people would stop by and take a pic. Everyone really went on about the color combo. I am happy with TBII and KO. Non-car people kept praising the grille. Go figure that one out. What I'm not so hot on? 1. Sound system as I suspected is pretty lackluster. I haven't played too much with it yet but can't say my impressions so far are very positive. I would have gladly paid to upgrade it to a more fitting unit to a car of this caliber but BMW seems to have made that decision for us. 2. Clutch pedal engagement feels weird to me. I feel the engagement when I take off in first but it doesn't feel natural yet. It's odd...I think I will be installing a clutch stop and maybe a short shift kit to help address some of the play but it has only been a day. Will keep updating. For a first day what I can say to those who haven't picked up their car, hang in there because the wait is absolutely worth it. The in person presence, quality of the materials and overall ride makes this in my humble opinion the best M3 yet. For those who are still on the fence, I can assure you that while you might not be 100% on the car, make sure you take one for an extended test drive before you write it off completely. It has blown away my expectation...and take this from someone who firmly believes that Porsche is the best thing since sliced bread. For your $ and value, the G8x is the best car out there.

Just drove a couple of competitors (RS5, Alfa Quadrifoglio). I agree wholeheartedly with your last line. The tech, build quality, and handling of the G8x is simply first rate. This latest gen puts this car way closer to the 911 than an M3’s ever been. That makes it a remarkable value.

As a driver's car, it sits between the F80 and the G80. I certainly understand why some people picked this over the older M3. It's faster, handles better, and is more fun to drive than the F80. (It did exhibit an odd behavior in first gear where it didn't want to put down full power in anything but Race mode.) It also does a few subjective things arguably better than the F80 (sound, interior). In retrospect, it's amazing that Alfa hit the ground running with a true M3 competitor that could credibly claim superiority in a couple of important areas. I think most of the positivity around the QF's drive is based on comparisons with the F80. On the other hand, the G80 clearly feels like a next-generation performance car; it's faster again, with even better handling. Compared to the G80, I wasn't a fan of the QF's interior and technology features. Complete dealbreaker for me. Though the materials used are excellent, the interior design seems really dated. Clearly an F8x-era car. The infotainment is several steps behind even pre-G iDrive. The gauge cluster is a generation back from BMW's highly configurable Live Cockpit. On the plus side, I loved the QF's big, column-mounted aluminum shift paddles. If you absolutely hate the looks of the G80, it's a very nice backup option if we're strictly talking about the drive. For me, an M2 Competition for $55-60k is a better choice. |

I agree on the significant upgrade of the interior tech. Also the general consensus seems to be that the sound system is mediocre at best. Why they give us the same sound system as on the $35k X1 with no option to upgrade is beyond me.

congrats! trust me, Ottawa roads aren't as bad as Toronto, but I haven't lived there in a while (judging by the otto's plate)
wholly agree on the overall value and execution of the G8X.. I've tested most competitors and other than the C63S exhaust, not much else about the competition stood out, although that's somewhat expected given the generational leap and everything else at end of its gen lifecycle.

Congrats on the new car!
Does Bmw still use that clutch delay valve (CDV)? I remember doing the CDV delete on my e92 335 for better feel and engagement. |

I saw an all-black M4 this weekend at a dealer and was absolutely drooling over it. These cars look absolutely insanely good in real life, OPs model being no exception to that!

Isn't the latest news the guy who thought the G80 was too heavy so he spent $120k on an even heavier mustang? Or are we still on the "I haven't seen one yet so the car is a total failure" talk track? |
