BMW powers their entire line up with 3 engines.

Must be very exciting for them to use this strategy. Not as exciting for consumers.

Wow, people are complaining about 465 hp?! That's a pretty good jump over the introduction of the F8x at 425 which wasn't that much of an increase over the E9x.

Gotta leave the ZCP with some room to improve.

Cant wait! This time I will directly get a Competition model...

Hope they will put the M DCT because F90 8AT isn't as sharp...

BTW this is really a great new that the car will weight less than the current M3 CS!

I've been driving BMWs since the 1980s. I'm a huge fan. But no BMW has ever been a competitor to the 911. If they were around contemporaneously, maybe the 507 and 911 would have gone nose to nose.

With respect, no one at BMW Canada knows what the drivetrain of the next M3/4 will have. They may have well educated guesses, but at this early stage of development, I doubt a decision has even been made in Munich.

Fact...

@ORIGIN M. unfortunately , and amazingly , this is correct.

From what I have seen thus far BMWs current plan is to make a FWD/AWD 2er gran coupe, but to also make a 2er coupe that is RWD only.

I'm not sure how this makes sense at all but that is the information to date.

Recently BMW has recently decided to bring the current 1er sedan that they make for China's market to North America to sell in Mexico. Apparently they have just now figured out that people in North America like small sedans, despite the fact that BMW has sold MILLIONS of E30, E36, E46, E90 sedans in the USA.

https://www.motor1.com/news/250345/b...an-mexico/amp/

However BMW what bmw hasn't yet REdiscovered is that people bought those vehicles ( particularly the M versions ) because they were RWD.

With BMW having nearly Siamesed the M4 and M2 in their current generations, with the same motor , same curb weight and only a wheelbase difference , I really am concerned that they may just skip a 2 series coupe in RWD totally and just make a FWDAWD 2er next generation.

The current M2 has been incredibly successful for BMW pretty much against all odds. No 2er convertible M.. no sedan... and the M2 itself has been produced in Tesla like quantities ( that is to say... rather small! )

With bmw planning to move to a 4 M car hierarchy , I would not be surprised to see bmw reverse themselves on the 2 series coupe completely and opt to expand the 4 series line a little lower in order to not even bother with RWD in the 2er lineup.

While I don't disagree with your comment on BMW Canada, Munich has 100% made this decision. In terms of car development this car is just not that far out. Most of the decisions on this car have been made for years already.

Thankfully. My dad has a manual SLK and it's truly awful.

Doesn't the C63 have the clutch pack auto like the E63, not a torque converter?

I have an F80 M3.

I have owned all M3 from the e30 till now.

All i can say that it is a nice sporty daily driver but the car has grown way to big! I have an m2 competition on order and as soon that car arrives the M3 goes and it wil def be my last M3!

It is a shame to use the name M3 for a car this size! The size of a 1m with 400hp and 1350kg should called an M3. Not a car which has the size of a boat!

You also must hope the zf8 will not come into more M Cars. It is a very boring gearbox and way to slow on downshifts. It gives no M feeling at All.

Doesn't the M2 competition weigh more than the M3? Did you consider the Alfa Quadrifoglio?

Weighs ~ the same as an M3 Competition Pack. The base no-option M3’s are the low-weight models. The base M2 (2018) weighs approximately the same as no no-option 2015 M3.

No i am really a bmw driver. Like how they behave.

But even the m2 is way to heavy also, the smaller wheelbase gives a lot more fun in driving! The 1M Coupe is even better then the M2.

Weight kills the fun!
Size kills the fun!
And long wheelbase kills the fun!

All those three things bmw is doing wrong with every new car comming!

I also own an E30 M3 DTM race car 950kg and 330hp.

The lightness the size the wheelbase it s fun all the way!

Underwhelming news for sure.
Well I look forward to a lighter and more powerful car. My biggest hope is that they bring some of the "rawness" back that the E90 had as the F80 is refined to the point of feeling numb.

Plus this will have a modern interior. F80 interior is a warmed over E90.

You may be correct. But the one thing that I'm pretty sure is incorrect in this story is the 2020 on-sale date. If BMW follows its normal product lifecycle - and every indication is that it is - then the next gen 3er is released as a MY19, the next gen 4er is released as a MY21, and the next gen M3/4ers are released as MY22s. There'll probably be introduced sometime in CY21, so there's still a way to go yet.

I believe Scott said we would see the concept m3 next year. That puts it on track for a 2020 release... Definitely wont be 2022.

I just saw Scott's post from yesterday. Your right, he is predicting a break from precedent for the M3's release, followed by a "much more radical" 4er and M4 release according their normal cycles. If he's right, it sounds like BMW will try to distinguish the 3er and 4er as they did when they separated the 5er and 6er by replacing the latter with the 8. Good stuff.

Can't imagine steering improving much...unless it's "artificial" electronic feel like the stuff Porsche is pumping into their cars.
