I want to disable it without losing the burbles, is that even possible?
You don't need to use Expert Mode anymore. Bimmercode has 6 options in the RAM module section, then you go into Activation Codes and deactivate the ASD code.

The burbles are exaggerated by ASD. You won't lose it completely but it'll be incredibly muted.

If you want more pronounced burbles after this, swap out your midpipe and get a valve controller.

The problem is that when you do it the old way via Bimmercode, it doesn't work. Just setting ASD to "disabled" does nothing.

However, there is a slightly more involved way of doing it:

In Bimmercode, navigate to "Receiver Audio Module RAM"
There, you select "Expert Mode"
In Expert Mode, you select "3001_Audio und ASD"
There, you find all options starting with "ASD" and set them to "disabled" or "nicht aktiv"
Exit Expert Mode
On the bottom of the screen, tap "Activation Codes"
Find the one labelled "ASD" and select "Deactivate"

That's it, no more annoying ASD
Thanks but on the final part - deactivating the add activation code- I get a warning that this is irreversible unless you have some sort of a restore code and this scares me - thoughts on this?

I think you can back it up. Even if not, the dealer flashing an update will restore it.

Write the code down. You can 100% turn it back on. I did. Then I turned it back off.

It can be backed up and restored. I've tested it and it works.

What changes, besides less burbles, when you turn off ASD? My car has the button with the exhaust tips, which is also the "Sound" option on the M setup menu. Is turning off ASD the same as turning off that button?

ASD and the exhaust button are different. ASD has sounds for startup, idle, upshift and a few others.

You can turn off all ASD and still use the exhaust button to control burbles to be on or off.
