Also, I just came from a 2019 WRX STI and feel like this thing shifts stupid easy. The auto rev match makes it child's play. I've got full titanium exhaust & intake with downpipe and it seems like as aggressive it sounds the shifting almost didn't match, due to how smooth it was. Not seeing a reason (yet) to even do CDV del or anything? At 6000 miles right now.
That's good to hear... sounds like a somewhat similar thing to what I experienced (albeit briefly). I rented an Evo for a few days and that clutch was BRUTAL. I then drove my brother's civic si and that was so butter smooth it almost felt like I was driving an automatic. I'm guessing the G80 6MT will be closer to the civic si shift action than to the Evo.

I ended up taking it out after several months of using it. When I would really get into it and shift fast I was grinding 1st to 2nd a couple of times and said nope that's enough of that.

I had all 3 spacers in and it might have helped to take 1 or 2 out but it's just a piece of plastic and when you remove it you pretty much destroy the whole piece. Or at least that's what happened to me.

I have just gotten used to it now. In the future I may do an aftermarket shifter and or CDV delete.

Oh man some Evos are crazy, drove a 800whp one and it was insane. I heard the SI's shifting is amazing. I had a 2006 SI, it was okay. I'm still liking the shifting of the G80 overall.

Some of the performance manuals (S2000 comes to mind, GT4 comes to mind) are a bit too aggressive in regular daily driving as you need to be very precise as revs quickly drop.

However, the M2 CS and G80 M3 clutch lightness can be a drawback in all situations. I wish the clutch was heavier, as far as the actual engagement, its fine if not a tad vague and rubbery. But thats sometimes easier to live with in daily driving.

That said, no one should be faulted for have an G8x in the ZF as the manual isn't something that is world class. The manual isn't so easily the standout version of the car like it is for other cars. It obviously may hold its value much better, as i could see people wanting it on the secondary market.

Yeah he has a 2022 civic si and the clutch operation is so smooooooth. If the G80 operation is even close to that I'll be happy. Picking mine up next week so will see how it is.

How is it for someone who's never driven a manual? I ordered a 6MT but haven't really driven one and will be picking it up and driving home 3 hours from the dealer, with 98% of my experience being youtube videos and the other 2% being stalling coming off first gear on an E46 M3 with an upgraded clutch.

Your 1-2 shift after an hour will be just as smooth as a 20+ year veteran.

If not sarcastic that's encouraging. My main issue with the E46 was that I'd let off the clutch too quick. I'm learning now that I should leave my foot on the bite point while initially gassing for 3-4 seconds and then let go of the clutch. Does that sound about right?

I hadn’t driven a manual in 20+ years when I went to pick up my G82. 1st gear took a little getting used to when I had to kind of relearn stick while leaving the dealership. But it came back to me quick.

With that said, the manual is very forgiving. Just make sure you have auto rev matching on for your trip home so you don’t stress out with down shifts. You can learn that later once you’re more settled in.

As for 1st gear, honestly you can realease the clutch slowly and wait for the bite point. Your RPMs will slowly climb and the car will start to coast on its own. I’d say just get home safely then when you’re ready, go find a parking lot and work on your 1st gear gas/clutch release timing. Don’t rush first gear and don’t freak out if you stall. If you stall push the clutch back in with the brake depressed and the car will start back up automatically. The rest of the gears are gravy.

Enjoy!

This is so strange to me. I guess it’s because I’ve owned so many BMWs with MT. My G80 shifts like butter.

It’s interesting my 2021 M4 I traded for my 2022 M3 had a completely different shift feel. I don’t know if they made a change between years or if my ‘21 needed a bleed but my M3 shifts absolutely beautifully.

I’ve driven and raced manual cars since the early 90s.

The Tremec TR6060 is the best manual transmission I’ve used but the transmission in the M3 is great for a daily driver. I’m just thankful we literally have one of the best (and sadly last) manual transmission performance sedans available to us. (M3/M4 and the Caddy BW cars)

Got ya. Thanks. I think that’s the way to go, leave the clutch stop out of the equation.

My C7 was a 7MT and it was the best feeling transmission I’d ever driven. I had zero issues with it. I think in 35k miles, I grinder 2nd once or twice. But it was amazing. My Type R wasn’t as good. It was a more delicate shifting experience, for sure.

And you’ve never driven a manual, and decided to order an $80k car in a manual? Pretty brave.

Driving a manual is a walk in the park. You’ve already established that the bite pint is the most important part about driving a manual. I’ve taught a few people how to drive manual, and it only takes a few minutes. Once they understand the concept, it’s all practice from there.

What I tell people, is, go out to an empty parking lot, obviously with someone that can get the car out there for you.

Make sure the parking brake is released, and foot on the clutch and on the brake. When you’re ready, take your foot off the brake. Just holding the clutch in. Slooooooooooooooly ease up on the clutch until the car starts to move, at the bite point. Push the clutch back in.

You will see that you can get the car moving without any other pedals. I’d putt around the parking lot just playing with the bite point. Once you get the car rolling a few MPH, lightly press the accelerator.

Then the next part is, foot off the gas, clutch in, shift, clutch out, gas.

I'm embarrassed to say that my last BMW manual was my E46 M3 I bought new in 2001. While not Honda shifter feel, I had no issues with it. Many auto M cars later, I found myself buying a G80 6MT on a whim because I fell in love with it during the test drive and the dealer offered it to me under MSRP.

I actually really enjoy the shift action on the G80. No complaints here.

I miss my e46 m3, it was a great car. My manual e90 was great as well but always had stupid little mechanical gremlins pop up. The best manual I've had is my 997 gt3, no one makes manuals better than Porsche. Just my .02

Get a clutch stop makes it easier to find the bite point. 10 dollar fix made a big difference.

Clutch stop made the engagement point of the clutch better but 1-2 shift is a PITA. Installing my STS valve controller and my shop will do the CDV delete. Other than the high clutch engagement and the 1-2 shift it’s a great transmission. As Limegrntaln said, the best manual
I ever had was my 15 C7 with a 7 speed manual.

Its such a good transmission. I loved having 7 gears to choose from. That car probably got more attention than my G82.

Once at the bite point you should continue easying the clutch up. At the same time you can apply a little throttle to avoid stall as the engine loads up. Do not ride the clutch or gear stick as you will wear then out. Ie don’t rest your foot on the clutch nor your hand on the gear lever when not actively doing something.
