2024 M3 Comp X
Hello all,
I have the opportunity to purchase M3CX perfectly spec'd to my liking. I looked at build sheet and was sold! Then when sales associate sent me pics of the car i realized it has a sunroof. Not only do i personally prefer the CF roof, but I feel like as far as resale this could be an issue and devalue car. Feels wrong to spend all that money with no carbon roof on an M, however the car is beautiful still. Opinions? |

It won't really be a factor for resale, but if it bugs you, it could push you to sell/trade it sooner.

Lots of people won't buy a car without the carbon fiber roof. Some don't care about resale, but I think resale will be affected negatively with a sunroof.

I had a F82 with sunroof and a F80 without. Guess what, sunroof had no effect on resale. But, I grew to love the carbon fiber roof so much that all of my subsequent M’s are carbon fiber. OP, the wording of your post leads me to think that you really want carbon fiber roof. If I am right, don’t settle. Just order one to your specs or find one on the ground. Everytime I settle for a car that isn’t my spec, I end up regretting it.

To each his own but I would not by a M3/M4 without the CF roof. Not for strength but because I do not want a sunroof. Had cars with them for years and can’t recall ever using it. My advice, don’t settle.

Some thoughts. 1) color plays a role here. If black, probably a non-issue. If another color the carbon really pops (visually speaking). 2) if you're not tracking it, the weight and cog really don't matter with this car - it's already super heavy and has an enormous amount of power and grip. 3) if it has a black interior, you might want to lighten things up with a moonroof. it not, plenty of light with all the windows. also, if you want to tint the windows, having a moonroof is a nice way to let some light in when you want to. 4) CF roof has an interesting drawback, albeit very minor and rare instances - when something falls on the car like an acorn or heavy rain it can be loud in there - doesn't really matter though imo. 5) resale is definitely better on the carbon roof - I have absolutely no basis other than questionable anecdotal evidence.

I would not pass up purchasing the car simply because it has a sunroof - especially if it's spec'ed to a T per your liking. You'll find that people on this forum will tell you the same thing about laser lights or carbon bucket seats - don't buy the car without them. In fact, many people on here will tell you that resale value tanks unless you have every option on the spec sheet selected, which is not true. The truth of the matter is, the vast majority of G80 / G82 owners are not on these forums because they're passionate about these cars but not obsessive. Nothing wrong with being obsessive about cars, that's why I'm here too, but I don't think a sunroof will hurt your prospects for the bulk of people buying these machines.

Any discount or incentive to take this car, other than it being on the lot and delivery now. Can the dealer get you an allocation to order one 100% as you like? Depends how fast you want or need the car and if not having the CF roof will bother you over time. If not, then go for it. As others said, the color will make a big difference. No way I would accept a sunroof on AW or lighter colors as it really stands out. Maybe on black or dark grey/blue.

Unless you need the car now, why spend 80-100k on a new car that pretty much has to be ordered (limited new availability) for a spec that’s not exactly what you want?
For me, CF roof 100% of the time. When shopping for our e92 M3 earlier this year, the CF roof was a must have (along with a manual). |

if you buy a sunroof car when you want a carbon roof car you will regret it every day you drive it or see it.
I wouldn't touch a sunroof M or Turbo S for that matter. there are very few people seeking sunroof cars, only those that accept them out of impatience. |

Since you're asking, I am guessing you're a bit torn on this which is understandable. One main question to ask yourself is if you like sunroofs and do you use them. My DD (IS 350) has a moonroof and I can say I have maybe used it once in 10 years. Our family SUV has one and I don't think we ever used it. That is the functional aspect. I'll ignore any concerns about weight/stiffness for this discussion as for the many of us, it probably doesn't matter.
Second is the subjective which is the whole question of the look and feel of the car. Personally, I would not get an M3 with a sunroof/moonroof over the carbon roof. To me, moonroofs are kind of associated with "sporty" cars (and regular cars) vs what I consider a sports car. Also, the carbon roof is undoubtedly a unique/special feature of the M3, so to me it is more fitting to the overall theme of the car and more special. These M3s have become quite expensive, and I think it is important to get what you really want at these price levels. If the moonroof is a "don't care", then it shouldn't matter but if deep down you really want/prefer the carbon roof, that is what you should get. Its your money. |
