I think I read about 40% of M3/M4 buyers bought the base model. Especially as AWD becomes more widespread across the BMW product line, the manual's are going to become more fringe and less wanted by the mainstream. If you watch the used 2022 M3/M4 market on either Autotrader or CarGuru's, the manuals sit for longer.

Are you referring to informal polling here? Because I suspect actual sales figures are probably something like 55% xDrive, 30% RWD, 15% 6MT.

I read it as a comment on this board. They didn't say the source. It struck me as much higher than I would of guessed, which was why I remember it.

Based on F8x resale numbers, the manual transmission does seem to do better.

Natch, you want to buy the car for you, not for the next guy.

This isn't surprising, honestly, as it's certainly become a niche market for manual transmissions. I doubt it will ever become as polarized as the e46 M3 SMG/non-SMG, but over time, I still would expect the manuals to trade at a higher rate. But, who knows. As someone else in this thread said, we buy this for ourselves. The next owner can figure things out themselves.

I prefer a manual over the auto, but want a convertible. So I will settle for a body style with the transmission that I want or settle for the transmission in a body style that I want.

I miss my E93 M3 with a stick...

Manual transmission was the main thing that brought me into the BMW fold. Clearly a niche market, but I’m thankful there are still a few companies out there that are willing to keep making these cars.

Most people buying/leasing manual aren’t concerned about resale

I'd wager that.
That being said though, when it comes time to sell, if you are patient and the car is clean, I would bet you can get a good price for it.

In my area the resale values of manual M3s and M4s are much higher. Especially pre-F30. At this juncture with the proliferation of EVs well under way in this decade, if you are looking to keep the car for a long time manual would be my advice. When ICE vehicles start to become classics, people will not be viewing these vehicles as daily drivers. If you are leasing, probably doesn't matter.

I owned a lot of manuals when I was single and younger. With traffic and being older, manuals are not enticing now. The people on this board doesn't represent the overall market. If that were the case, every manufacturer would still be producing manuals.

completely disagree. i think the M3 looks better than the X5M and X3M, but I'm not really an SUV guy.
