Similar price for base and Competition models
Even when fully loaded (excluding Driving Assistance Professional which is not available on the base model), the price difference is still only $1,800!
At first I was shocked by this, but then I considered that they are essentially the same car with differences in power and torque. Aesthetics and suspension are the same. So, if you don't care about the manual transmission, it’s a no brainer to go with the Competition model. The upcharge of $1,800 for extra 30HP and 74TQ is incredible. I don’t think you can find that much gain elsewhere for that price. I plan to go with the manual and thought I would be getting a bigger break on price. How does the community feel about this minimal price difference between the two?

Disappointing, right? As someone stated above, the deal is on the Comp.

Edit: I checked the F32 price guide over in that forum. AT is standard and MT a no cost option... |

I realize I'm well above the median age of most here, but "it doesn't seem like that long ago" that *all* BMWs, right up through the 7-series, came standard with a manual transmission (with the slushbox automatics an extra cost option). BMW even played that up in their advertising here in the USA. The last 7-series model year that came stock with a manual transmission was the 1985 E23 735i. The final two model years of the E23 weren't available with the manual. I owned a 1988 E32 735i 5-speed manual for many years (the 1988-1990 model years of the E32 were available with a manual), and it was a great car. Ordered from the factory with a 5MT and LSD (back when an LSD was an option on all BMWs too).

The starting prices for the base and Competition M3/M4 as well as the difference in standard equipment were covered in the introductory press material.
The only difference between base and Competition is that the base has: - 6MT - Lower output engine to accommodate the 6MT - Body color mirrors/spoiler and chrome exhaust tips (with the Competition model’s gloss black parts available at no charge) - 18”/19” wheels (with all of the same 19”/20” styles as the Competition model available for a nominal price) I think they should have just dumped the 18”/19” wheels and brought the starting price up on the base model, but they were clearly looking to squeeze it in under $70K MSRP. |

AT has not been an upcharge for years while M-DCT always has. I.e. the G8X is just following a now well established practice of no discount on MT vs. ZF AT. |

There is no upgraded motor, unless you count the different software calibration.

Or do you think they would just de-tune it slightly to get numbers that the MT could handle? I highly doubt they paid for more testing. |

Remember we need think more broadly, the base motor on the G80 is likely the s58 variant for the next gen M2. So investment in an alternative variant would have more payback than just the 6MT g8x, it will probably power both manual and auto M2 |

However for the G80: base variant S58B30O0 Comp variant S58B30T0 Those different designations almost certainly mean more than just a tune. How much is different we won't really know till more technical details come out (or an insider fills us in) I will add another point to show just how much has to be different for an engine designation to change, the X3m features the T0 in both the base and comp models despite having less torque (different tune) and a different intake setup than the m3s. This all leads me to believe there are some notable differences between g8x comp and base motors |
