Engine braking during break-in period
Is engine braking every time I come to a stop bad during the 1200 mile break-in period? Downshifting to about ~5k rpm all the way to 2nd gear. Does this actually help seat the rings better?

The gudiance provided by BMW is:
"Drive at varying engine and road speeds, but do not exceed 5,500 rpm and 106 mph/170 km/h. Avoid full throttle or kickdown under all circumstances." - BMW M4 Competition Owners Manual, page 304. I think your fine since you are staying at or under 5. The key during break in is 1, not about 5500RPM and 2, vary the engine load meaning dont go on the freeway and leave it in 8th gear at 2000 RPM for long periods of time. Most of the advice given on the forum for people who want to burn it of quickly or have a long drive after delivery is to put it in sequential mode and vary the gearing. drop it 7th or 6th gear while maintaining speed. This will vary the RPM but while allowing you to drive safely on a highway. |
