How long it took me to get an allocation - A visual story

I'm active enough on here where I feel a sense of community.... almost family. So I wanted to take this moment to tell you all a visual story of how goddamn long it took to get an M3 allocation. I fully realize others have waited just as long and some even longer - I have felt your pain. To those of you still waiting, I pray for your continued strength and patience. May your wait be short and your excitement remain strong.

To the Bimmerpost community - this is the most awesome automotive community and I'm blessed to be a part of it. The support I received here through this wait really helped more than I can express, and for that I'm forever grateful.

Here's everything that happened between the time I placed my deposit to me FINALLY being blessed as one of the chosen...

February 28th, 2022 - Placed my first of 3 deposits for an M3. Over the next few days/weeks I placed 2 more deposits.

March 2022 - Went on a solo trip to the motherland for the first time after 12 years. It had less than a month since I placed my deposits down but it's like everywhere I looked, I saw the roundel staring back at me....

April 2022 - a rare occurrence of good weather and my daughter reminds me that she already has her new car

April 2022 - I started seriously thinking about getting a 6MT. So I decided to rent an Evo X to see how I'd like it. The brutal clutch kicked my ass but I had a blast. It was official.... I was going to get a 6MT M3. Around this time one of the CAs emails me letting me know I'm now 1st in line for an allocation. The excitement starts to build!

April 2022 - My son is born. The little guy had a rough time getting out of the hospital, but soon enough he became my personal tester for my new H-shifter.

May 2022 - I decided I should really figure out what color I want. Gran Turismo 7 doesn't have a G80... but they have quite a few manufacturer specific color options. That's where I started to really like Oxford Green - So I got myself an F82, applied oxford green to it, and drove it around, admiring it in replays.

June 2022 - Now I'm getting antsy... 1st in line but 2 months later and no allocation still? What better coping mechanism for the wait than to just order another car! And with that... I placed a deposit for the X7 LCI.

July 2022 - Family trip to Traverse, MI for the annual Cherry Festival. But this is the only cherry I like to look at

July 2022 - Visited my local dealer to talk with the CA and see what's happening with allocations. Found a used G83 sitting there and got a chance to test drive it. Wow.... excitement reignited. What a freaking machine.
Name: 11.jpg
Views: 671
Size: 259.9 KB

August 2022 - Now I'm getting even more antsy.... over 5 months and still no allocation despite one dealer telling me I'm 1st in line way back in April? Had to move the car out from the garage so my daughter could take her Range out. Coming back from the walk I looked at my car and thought... you know what... I don't have it too bad.

August 2022 - Took a trip to NYC, and the ants in my pants are at an all-time high especially after seeing so many people get their allocations over the past couple weeks. My wife complained I spent half the trip on Bimmerpost.

Congrats OP it's about time your allocation came through! Similarly to you I started the process in late January and was told I was #1 in March. 4 months went by with no movement so I definitely feel you on how agonizing and frustrating the wait could be especially when you hear of others getting allocations in the monthly allocation threads. I ended up getting getting my allocation in July and the car has been sitting at Bremerhaven for 3 weeks now waiting on a west coast bound ship.

Sounds like it was quite the journey for you during this process and I'm sure it will definitely be worth the wait once the car arrives, especially with the Oxford Green/Tartufo combo. Onto the next step now

Enjoyed reading your journey thus far, getting an allocation is a huge step. The other big hurdles for me were getting a vin and catching a ship, sitting at the port was the most frustrating part of my journey. Good luck with the remainder of yours.

Green with brown leather will always be a classic look.

What trim did you choose?

It was so intersting reading about ur experience and the agonizing wait. I hope u get ur allocations soon esp given that BMW had dropped so many in August and hopefully Sept. I was wondering how set r u with the color. If I were to guess the individual color is prob gonna delay ur production even if u get an allocation. I was waiting till March and had placed orders in 3 different dealership and just couldn’t wait anymore. Just paid 5K over MSRP for an open allocation and my car is being built in wk36. What can I say, when you get frustrated and impatient you just end up making an impulse decision but it’s going to be so worth it once I see the car in person !!!

Great thread and congrats on the allocation (and the son, obviously)!

I am still playing around with all the Individual greens but am probably just going to stick with IOM. I am 112 but was told I could change it. I promised my CA that I have a definitive answer Tuesday.

Several allocations which dealers received at 112 in the recent past have moved to 150 within a couple of days. You might want to submit the request before it too late.

Thanks for that. I had the email in my outbox and just sent it. I only actually changed wheels and calipers so not the end of the world either way. Still, appreciate the heads up.

Individual paint order will add at least two more months to your order process. And that's under the BEST conditions. I ordered a 2018 M550i and had it in two months. 18 months later I ordered a 2020 M500i with Rosso Corsa individual paint, 4 months 1 week. And that was pre-covid and not a full M car. Just sayin.......

I did carbon fiber. I usually shy away from CF interior trims, but I felt BMW did a great job with it in this car.

Yup well aware of extended time frame with individual colors. The difference however in the wait time between prior to getting an allocation vs after receiving an allocation is the ambiguity. Without the allocation there were concerns over dealers selling allocations to the highest bidder, not being transparent with the process, screwing over those of us paying msrp. With an allocation in hand the responsibility shifts from the dealer to bmw, which in and of itself offers a bit more piece of mind.

As far as individual color is concerned, how much time it adds is partially down to when they batch together orders for production. My current build week is estimated at week 46, so at least I have a target in mind as opposed to a huge question mark and a dealer making false promises.

Fun post. Sorry it took so long to get an allocation, but good on you for hanging in there. Here is a shot of Full Tartufo for you. I have had my car 3 weeks and am absolutely enthralled with the color.

Special color allocations take an extra 3 months, right? I am too impatient, placed a deposit Aug 6 and am taking delivery in 2 weeks of an M3CX that was dealer swapped and somehow became available in transit. (It's on the Atlantic at the moment.)

It depends on when the build slot is open during the next individual batch production batch. It can be anywhere between a few weeks to few months.

Not many can capture this color properly. This looks pretty accurate to me!
