2021 M4 Exhaust Sounds - Startup and Some Revs

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com

As more and more videos come out of this new generation M4 I find myself wanting one more and more. I was in the "this thing looks hideous camp" when some of the first spy shots were released but now as more and more closeups and reviews come out I've been I've been converted to a believer. I can't wait to hear one once the aftermarket gets ahold of it and installs an exhaust. I'm lucky enough to live in a state that only requires a rear plate so the goofiness of figuring out where to put the license plate in this whole getup isn't an issue in my situation.

Does anyone know when US pre-orders start and whats involved. I usually purchase a vehicle once it's released or right off the showroom but so I never ordered one during a pre-order. I'm stoked!

This thing sounds like it has a rod knock when the exhaust valves are open. The interior is amazing though definitely my favorite part. Well that and the rear of the car is nice as well.

The mat under the car is pretty neat! Give me some idea about my garage flooring.

I don't know about the car in that color combo though.

In terms of sound it sounds awesome! I love the really deep tone of the idle. I must say however that in the cold start there's a rattle that doesn't sound very good, but after it went away it's a very pleasant sound. Overall i have to say that its a much better sound than the previous generation.

Sounds great! Thanks for sharing

Call around to dealers to get on a list. Probably will require a deposit. As for actual ordering one, only ones available right now are HEA cars, and a good portion of them are already spoken for, but maybe still possible. You would be limited to whatever options the dealer gets though, so take it or leave it kind of thing. You wouldn't be able to build one of those.

Good luck!

One of the reasons I like living in Delaware. No ugly front license plate!

As some others have pointed out, the cold start does not sound all that great - similar to the S55. My guess it has to do with emission controls and keeping some of the muffler exhaust flaps shut on cold start (also like on the S55).

I remedied this situation on my F80 Comp Pack by installing a CG Precision exhaust valve controller and set it to keeping the exhaust valves open at all times, including cold start. Problem solved and instant, pleasant sounding exhaust note - including the "GTS Roar". I am sure there will be similar exhaust mods for the G8x in the not too distant future...

It's Swisstrax flooring. I recently put it in my garage and can't speak highly enough about it. It's amazing. Regarding the new M4, I was in the camp of this thing is a hot mess. But it's certainly growing on me. Seeing it in person will make all the difference I'm sure. I currently have an F82, love the thing. When I get tired of it, which I'm sure will be never, I'll think about moving to the new platform.

Cold start is mostly awful, I've hated starting my engine ever since getting an F80 M3, the S58 in my X3M isn't much better, at points in the video the car sounds a bit broken!

I'm sure the M3/4 it will grow on me.

The front license plate definitely needs to come off.

No, it's not just you. That cold start sounds awful. I've seen other videos where it sounds better, as pointed out it must be the difference between cold start vs. warmed. I understand that the startup experience is only a small % of time spent with the car, but someone at BMW must have heard that and thought "this is not what $80K is supposed to sound like". The sounds at :49 and 1:10 should not be coming out of any car with the BMW roundel on it.

Looks better that the early renderings for certain.

It's growing on me, albeit slowly, although I still think the grille is out of proportion to the rest of the car.

It was love at first sight with both my E92 convertible and M4 GTS, although I still miss the sound of the S65 engine.

I'm hoping I'll grow to love it!
