How Much For a Front End Repaint?

I just wanted to ask around to see if anyone has either gotten a quote for a front-end repaint (Bumper and/or hood) or had a front-end repaint done to their M3/M4. Also, how much were you quoted for the job? I have more than a few noticeable rock chips that I want to remove next summer with a repaint.

Not surprised you haven't gotten an answer yet. Given the age of these cars, you're probably one of the first looking to do so outside of an insurance claim.

Would love to chime in, but inflation is a whore and haven't gotten any work done since before covid. Best of luck though. Not what you want to hear but maybe some touch up paint for the rock chips can hold you over....

Why doesn't the OP go out and get a few quotes and let us know?

You are right. I’ll try to get a quote or two by the end of the day and get back to this.

If you could go back would you have PPF the front end in hindsight?

I’d worry about paint match depending on the color. If you have Alpine White it should be fine but have something with a ton of flake and it may be off. That might bother you more than the chips. Personally I’d just enjoy it as is and at least you don’t need to worry about that first chip.

I’ve had 2 white cars that needed painted bumpers and 2 different high end shops didn’t match them 100%.

Based on my F80 experience, about $2.5k adjusted for inflation.

$500ish covers supplies and quality labor. How much profit the owner wants to make varies. My buddy’s margins is anywhere from 20-40%

After texting a few people I know to get connected to other people, the average price for both the hood and bumper was 1,000-1,200.

Yes. Not getting PPF when I had the chance is my biggest regret. My initial plan was to get it PPF'ed after Bimmer Invasion but little did I know the drive there was where I was going to get a majority of the rock chips I have now. Also, the only thing turning me away from getting PPF was the high price tag but deeply regret not pulling the trigger when I could've.

That seems awfully low.

So what you gonna do? Repaint and then get PPF ? Cuz you know if you repaint samething will happen.
The quote seems really low too I’d be wondering about the quality.

Sounds a little low like others are saying. Google search shows some people recommend waiting 30, 60 or 90 days before you can apply PPF to new paint.

My plan moving forward is to repaint and PPF 30-60 days after the repaint. and then ceramic coat on top of it all

You know PPF has ceramic infused in it now.

So let's say I did cosmetic damage to my bumper and hood which had PPF on them and didn't want the repair showing up on a carfax. So I take the car to my local garage and pay for it myself. The total cost could be (using rounded numbers):

Original PPF which is now scrap $2000
Repaint of bumper and hood $2000
Replace PPF $2000

That's $6000 vs $2000 if I never bothered with the PPF.

First of all, it's not going to cost anywhere *near* $2k to PPF just a bumper. Entire front ends of cars, including fenders, hood, A-pillars, rocker panels, etc, can cost $2-3k. You're looking at $500-750 for just the bumper IMO.

Secondly, the point of PPF is not to include it in a cost overrun analysis, it's to vastly lower the chances of you even needing a repaint in the first place. That's where you should be comparing your value.

If you PPF the car I don’t really understand the purpose of ceramic coat. I got Stek film the water beads of it without any coating. But that’s just me. Obviously opinions here vary greatly between NO PPF to partial PPF to full PPF to PPF and ceramic coat.
Good luck man!!

I think turbojg is making a case for ppf being a waste under certain scenarios, and frankly he isn't wrong.

There are scenarios, not necessarily regarding rockchips, where if the front end is ruined your investment in ppf would be lost.

You would then have lost the ppf investment, have to pay a respray/repair and in theory ppf the front again.
