The 8AT is less drama than the DCT. Function is very similar. Some people like the drama, some don't. All I care about is does it do what I ask it to do and is it reasonably snappy. 98% of the time it does, but if I want to downshift into high revs while under load, sometimes it doesn't allow the shift and I can't figure out why. The gear I'm selecting won't hit redline upon shifting so should make the shift. It's odd and doesn't upset me really but it is unexpected when it happens.

I've enjoyed all these videos, the insight is appreciated.
I will forever mourn the loss of the DCT, but I'm also confident the ZF will work very well. |

Oil pan is ribbed for everyone's pleasure.
Anyway yeah they went full auto but ZF8 speed is the best in business and it allows easy awd addition without too much weight gain. Plus it gives daily driving comfort and torque multiplication from a stop, so not all is lost. Yeah it may not have the "kick" of the DCT between gearchanges but it's a grown up car now. Can't wait for the AWD M3, it's gonna be a point and shoot weapon. |

Haven't watched the video but what kinda turns my eyes into hypno-wheels is that you launch the car in 2nd to get the best times. I know this is old news to the 335i guys but it still feels a little weird and hack-y. Will probably be accepted in no time given the 3.6... runs that have already been posted.

Interesting that there isn't any baffling inside the transmission fluid pan, just the deeper well for the pick up.

The e9x DCT did the shift in 80 milliseconds and I believe the f8x was the same... so about half the time it takes the 8AT to shift

Adding AWD panders to a much greater audience so it just makes sense that the gearbox also targets a wider audience. Plus you can still get the 6MT/RWD. For me I would consider an M3 wagon but if I’m going for bigger/awd/auto anyways might as well get the SUV that adds the practicality/towing.

I hadn't realized this. But I guess another point in the "zf is the optimal transmission for a really fast road car" column But I didn't think they hid that the dct is the better track transmission |

Would love to hear some other reviews from current G80 owners that came from the F8x cars with DCT. Do you miss it? |

I drive on track and on the street with the DCT in mode 1 of 3, so I don't get a 'wham' already. |

This transmission does what a DCT can do but also adds a level of comfort that's why it's being used.

Just more cost cutting. There's a reason why Porsche, Ferrari, new Corvette and even Mustang GT500 still use the dct...it's better in these performance applications.

You can make your 6MT “kick” too, just don’t rev-match your shift

Aren't the dramatic/harsh/"kick"/fun parts of the DCT the parts where it's being the least efficient? Or, erm, at least the parts where the operator is causing it to be less efficient?

Bingo nailed it cost is the main factor why BMW went with ZF transmission, other high end vehicles still offer DCT on their product's lineup.
