Is there a huge difference from the Pirelli to the Michelin tires?
I wonder why people dog the Pirellis so much? Don't the Michelins wear pretty fast?

Also, is there a star rating on an approved Continental tire?
I find Continentals often to be a best value.
Thanks for input

Have any of you gone to a non-star tire that has improved wear and similar performance?

Michelins are like Nike shoes. Everyone wants to have them because they feel cool. A tiny percentage of people will drive the car in a manner that would reveal whatever performance advantage the Michelins may offer. I ran PZeros on a previous car and had a great experience. Nice warm weather grip and good tread life.

To some extent yes... but, if you're lowered with spacers, Pirellis will rub the front air vent where the Michelins will not in many cases.

Yes I've seen that around. In my eyes, that's literally the only real world advantage besides "bragging rights".

This video is a 100% must watch. And I also emailed Jonathan and asked him something similar. And here's his reply.

The most important OEM tire video you will ever watch.

Transcript from the picture email.

Thanks for the email.

As much as I would love to do such a test, it's way too political to get support from BMW or the tyre companies in any way. In theory, all OE tyres should perform at a similar level, that's the whole points of an OE program. In practical terms there's often small differences, but I certainly wouldn't rip off a new set of OE Pirellis or Yokos just to get a Michelin on.

Hello, Mr. Jonathan Benson,

I've seen your BMW OE Star marked comparison between the PS4s and the Star PS4s. My questions is, most people are getting cars delivered, including myself, with Pirelli P4Z P-Zero Star Marked tired.

Also, Yokohama has recently been awarded Star Marked status and the Yokohama ADVAN V107 Star. These Yokohama tires, are coming fitted on the BMW 1000M accessory wheel and tire package in 20/21 sizing. I'll attach a picture, below. The new BMW 3.0 CSL Homage, is supposed to be fitted with a 20/21 wheel package, and all of the spy shots of the vehicle, I’ve seen, are fitted with Michelins. So, lets hope that they have the BMW Michelin Star, in a 21 size coming on this new car, because that means they will be available. Also, the Cup2 R is coming, standard on the M4 CSL, which is fitted with BMWs new 19/20 sizing Cup 2 Rs, in the correct sizing. Essentially giving BMW G80/82 owners, like me, 2 more options for Michelins.

Is there any way you can put together a video on at least the Pirelli P Zero Star marked differences between OEM and off the shelf tires? Here is the Yokohama news release on the Yokohama tires.

The Pzero are prone to overheating pretty quickly on track whereas the Michelin PS4S tend to require a bit more work to get temps up as high.

The pzero start to degrade performance wise after 3-4 heat cycles on track.

If you are just spirited driving your car on the street, the performance will be nearly identical between the two.

I got PZeros that came with my car. Dont know if its a summer vs AS thing but the thread dept is really shallow compared to my DWS. Wonder if this is why they wear out quickly and lose grip. Havent seen the Michelins in person so dont know of the thread depth is any better

The OEM tires are in the 8/32nds range. Brand new. Like you said, not much tread, compared to other tires. Most of the “off the shelf” tires have anywhere beteeen 9 and 11.

After owning dozens of new cars, there seems to be a pattern with OEM tires, or tires installed on a vehicle, on a brand new car, generally have a tire with 2-3/32nds less than the same “retail” tire.

Allowing OEMs to install a tire that up to 20% cheaper (for them) than a retail tire, saving millions of dollars a year.

The only car I’ve had in the past 10 years with tires that lasted an extreme amount of time, was 3 of my manual trans Chevy Cruze Ecos.

They come with Goodyear Eagle Fuel Max tires. I’d often get 56mpg on the highway, and the tires lasted me about 75k miles. My friend who had the same car, traded his car in, with 107k miles on the OEM tires.

All 4 were at 2/32, so, they needed to be replaced, but the cars weight and tire combination, made for a very long lasting OEM tire.

Wonder why. Is it a performance thing? I mean new deep tread is general more spongy and unstable which is why I find that tires get better as they are broken in.

Are the BMW star tires only sold at dealerships ? If thats the case and given the lower thread depth, that is a lot of money to be made for these tires. Now it makes sense.

It is absolutely this, and they do it on many items in the vehicles they produce.

Same reason they don't cover the fuse box cover, they let the bean counters have too much control to ensure they can hit price and profit objectives.

Sometimes they don't even pick the correct things to bean count. Cheap out somewhere else, and leave it alone where it counts.
