Just compare NL to Germany… the car in question (M3 Touring) costs 145.845€ in NL versus 101.300€ in Germany. That’s insane. |

The M3 Comp Touring starts 4.000€ less than the X3M Comp in Germany. At 101.300€ in Germany, you knock off 19% VAT and you’re down to 85.126€. Depending on the exchange rate you’re looking at around $90,000 USD. |

I've been living in the US for almost a decade now and always wondered why fast German wagons were not available here given how successful they are in Europe. It's definitely not because of low demand for sure! I read it was due to some sort of crash test regulation, is that true? If so, how stupid! How a touring could be less safe than the garbages that I see on the road every day??

It’s a long story. The USDM exchange rate in the 80s led to TONS of grey market imports into the US. The US branches of BMW, Porsche and MB lost lots of money. Their lobbyists told Congress the Euro-spec cars weren’t as safe as US market cars. DOT and EPA jumped on this and here we are. Now a clearly safe and environmentally sound car from Europe has to go through ridiculous testing to be sold in the US. So, a low volume car like the M3 Touring isn’t going to happen. That said, I’m really interested how the RS6 and E63S have come to market.

The suspension and springs on the G81 are modified and tuned by the M Division because of the extra weight. My car is brand new and have only 2000k km on the counter. I think, and hope, it will lower some more millimeters with more km.

Additionally, there was never supposed to be a G81 at all. The engineers were told not to make one. But they did anyway, showed it to the brass, and basically said "look at how awesome this is, you totally have to build it." So they did. But they weren't going to go back and spend the time/money to get the G21/G81 approved for sale in the US--that ship had already sailed. So no M3 Touring for us. |
