Ok so this gets stranger….
With the fuel warning light on the car goes automatically into 8th at motorway speeds and stays in 8th as it should.
Now I have filled the tank up it’s reverted to dropping back into 7th.
Am using Shell-V power so am sure it’s not fuel related.

Defo get it checked. I know when I initially had this, it went back to normal for a few days, then it happened again.
I know the OPF issue is becoming more common now so decided to get a catback system

I tested it on the way to get the fuel and worked ok. After leaving the garage it started immediately going back into 7th.
BMW booked for 9th so will keep that appt.

Going to keep the BMW booking for the 9th but I have a good news update !

Yesterday I received the V5 for the Porsche Macan GTS I traded in for the M4 having transferred off the personal plate.
I took the V5 to the BMW dealer in Colchester to obtain the £500 deposit refund.
On the way I did a bit of spirited driving (that G82 deserves, love it) and the car started driving in 8th when cruising at normal speeds.
Today it has also selected 8th as it should so hopefully the problem is resolved.
I do put the issue down to needing a decent amount of miles to clear the OPF after the previous owner only doing 9k miles in 2 and a half years. I’ve done 450 miles in a week to try and clear it.
When I was at the Colchester dealer I manageage to speak with the head technician and he admitted they have had a couple at least with low mileage where they have replaced the OPF under warranty. He mentioned it only happens on low mileage cars in his experience that don’t get a lot of motorway miles which makes sense knowing how the regen works.
Nethertheless I will keep the appointment on the 9th Jan so they can run diagnostics.
MPG has increased from 20 to 30 on motorway drives which I am also glad to see. The Macan only got 26 😞 and smiles per mile were nowhere near the M4, Macan was a mistake purchase as was any other SUV I had previously such as X6 M50d, great cars but not for me.
Loved my previous F82 and am now a happy owner of the G82, finally now the issue is resolved 🥰

I struggled with this, drove 1500 miles and barely left 7th gear. Not sure if conincidence or not but I was told they were doing a recall on the exhaust on the first service and it started to play up the next day.

Following a quick google during the 1500 miles with two trips north, I really did try and give the car a beating after google suggested a stuck regen but to no permanament avail.

Called BMW and they said no availability for three weeks so to call Assist. Assist attended, plugged in the car and didnt find any stored codes but following a search, did find notes about issues with G8X vehicles and the OPF.

Assist refered me straight into local dealer. Local dealer wouldnt do anything to it as readings dropped under 5grams (c4.87 for both) in the OPF (assuming BMW UK wouldnt cover the costs as fell outside of parameters). They took some persuading (and were realitivly helpful assuming their hands were tied), had it a week and although claim they didn't force regen the car, it was in the workshop for 5 hours following an extended road test the day it came out, it was fixed and its not returned since.

Got an embarrasing service sheet from BMW asking me to drive the car harder

I daily mine to London (so mix of roads and speeds) and was on 19k when it occured on mine with quite a bit of spirtited driving inbetween, so while less likey, higher mileage cars are susceptible to issues.

Mine is still playing up.. even after getting it back from the dealer and them asking me to drive for an hour at 70mph so the regen can reset it hasn't worked a couple months since getting it back.

weirdly when I am on my long drives from down south to Manchester etc after around 1 hour at motorway speeds it kicks into 8th gear for the rest of the journey then once the car is cooled down and I do the journey again won't go into 8th gear until again arund 1 hour at motorway speed.
at one point it would only do it at 84mph and then at 70mph..

with the wait times at the dealerships and them unable to fix I might have to change the exhaust which I was going to do anyway but not sure if to go with catback or opf back

I have BimmerLink so was able to see how much soot each OPF bank had. Initially it was over 5g per bank. I managed to get it to less than 1.5g after a few regen runs.
However, I have now gone for a catback system as I didn’t want this happening again.
So I also have the OPF delete cables and canbus module to stop any EML coming on.
Hope you get it sorted 👍🏽
I emailed bimmerlink as I was looking to buy it and they said you can’t see the OPF in their software. How did you do this as I now have this issue. Thanks

You need to go to settings and add the OPF to the dashboard.
Then when you connect to the car you should be able read the vals.
If there are any errors you will be able to see if the opf has been flagged
