Break in complete but nationwide shortage of differential oil

Had my break in service today for my 2024 M4 Comp X-Drive.

They did the oil change but there’s a nation wide shortage of differential oil. (Should be in stock in a few weeks they said but no official ETA)

I was planning on a lapping day (easy 6-7 10ths) and a drag race day in the next couple of weeks…now I’m debating if I should hold off until the diff service is completed.

Thoughts? It says on the invoice break in service completed but will need to come back for differential oil change.

I’m thinking maybe I’ll skip the lapping day but still do a couple of quarter mile runs.

The first diff oil change is usually LOADED with friction plate dust. I wouldn’t go “f around and find out” without getting past the first diff oil change.

In your case I would get it on Amazon or eBay and do the DIY. Mine took me an hour and the 2 half-liters cost $100 total. DIY before racing, and let BMW do it again after racing, to get your free “extra rinse”.

Right now searching 83222447362 on EBay shows in stock with delivery 10/25-10/27.

Quick question, is there a drain and fill plug on the diff?

Thanks!

Yes, both easily accessible after driving rear tires up on blocks…and I reused my plugs no prob.

Here’s the service manual courtesy of yousefnjr

Service manual says to get new plugs. They're inexpensive enough that I'd probably do it anyway.

2 of these: https://www.ecstuning.com/b-genuine-...h/33117525064/

Could also probably just pick up a couple from the local dealer.

Basically entry bolt bmw says to replace so take that for what it's worth, these aren't head bolts.

Same with my G82 from Vancouver. They only did the oil change for me when I come in for the break in service . I emailed to the service manager and complain about the whole shortage issue. I make sure he put in the necessary comments on my car service record so that in the future if something not working with my diff. They have to fix it without me paying for a penny. I have been waiting for diff. oil for over a month now. Contact the service manager again, he promise me they will do the diff. oil change for me next Friday. Cross my fingers and toes.

I have a full track day with about 30 laps and and a 1500km road trip after the break in service. I think the car is holding up good. No issue with the diff.

There’s no real need for new bolts. The torque rating isn’t high enough to stretch threads, especially heavy threads. Just check your o rings aren’t worn or ripped, mine were perfect.

Thanks all…I noticed when I picked up the car that the tech left an oil smudge on the front bumper by the hood. It’s got a slight stain there and I had the car ceramic coated before pickup while new. Why can’t techs be more careful…

I left the service manager a message saying they need to have the ceramic coating company fix this on the dealer’s dime. How hard is it to not have a mess made…

Edit: answered my own question and ordered off Ebay.

It's kind of mind boggling this is readily available online from many sources yet dealers seemingly can't get them.

I will not back to the same dealer for any future service. This kind of mistake shouldn't be happening at all.

Very true. I will not trust the ebay seller for the diff oil. Who know what is exactly inside the bottle. I even ask the BMW dealerships in the state for diff. oil and they are all out too.

That’s where I ordered. It’s the right stuff. Diff oil stinks bad…so you know it’s real.

Well here's what I got from Ebay, looks legit to me. Even has all the plastic bottle stampings and Mauser on the bottom. Figured I'd follow up at least.

Why did you buy it? It's the dealers responsibility to replace it at the break in point.

They didn’t say anything to me until after I picked up the car. (I’m in Canada)

Yep very dealer dependent. Seems to be in areas and waves.
