At about 9 months of having the M3 we are at about 12,000 miles. We recently had it in for the 10,000 mile check and the dealership said the brakes were good.

In the past couple of weeks I have had A LOT of squealing with the brakes usually just as I come to a stop (where everyone around me has a lot of time to ID the offending car ).

It is a consequence of my daily commute which is 12 miles mostly in town, and recent construction means that I am detoured around the one short stretch of 55 mph road.

You just need to heat the brakes up a couple of times. You do not need to go to Mexico for a 150-0 run. Just get up to normal cruise speed (80?) on the highway with no one behind you and brake moderately hard a couple of times down to maybe 45 mpg. Repeat that several times to get some heat in the brakes. That will quiet them down, and keep up with that on occasion.

I am swapping wheels with new tires in the next week and will scrub down the discs per the recommendations of another regular poster here (who is not a shit talker, but a contributor).

These brakes are not happy campers when just used for normal city commutes. Luckily the car itself is very happy with that duty.

I have been particularly sensitive about this and am watching the brakes closely because I have read that these cars eat rear brakes in about 15,000 miles. I suspect that might have to do with MDM engaging the rear brakes for stability control. Lately I have been using RWD and a low M Traction setting which does not use the rear brakes for anything.

Hope you are having fun with the car!

Thank you. Im ready to change mine to summers too. Maybe I will give the brake discs some scrubbing too. Do you use a specific product to scrub them?

I haven’t done it yet. But another member posted that he scrubs the residue with a brush including the drilled holes.

Unknown if it will help, but worth a try bc I will have the wheels off.

I use liberal dose of iron-x, leave to soak but not dry then pressure wash into pads and holes. Plus dry cycle around a loop to avoid corrosion post wash. Then of course some hard braking every so often. No issues when doing this every two weeks or so.

Actually, he does have useful things to say. But when people post the same question over and over and over again... it's like, c'mon man, try searching one time. The forum definitely won't die if people stop asking about brake squeal.

R u friends with him or what? Ive seen multiple threads from him all with snarky comments and nothing useful. Thinking he is too funny. Its very simple, if you dont feel like answering a post, just move on to the next thread. Just like most of us do. You dont see everyone answering every threads. Have u personally tried the search function on this site? Its terrible. You have to go to google to search for a post on bimmerpost. So the answer is simple, if you dont wanna answer it or feel annoyed, DONT DO IT, MOVE ON. How dumbed down is that. Its a forum and last time I checked, there isnt any limits on the posts you make or asking repeated questions. If there is one, the moderator would say so. So just stick to your lane. We are all adults here (maybe some arent), but stop posting shit asking to search. Peace out !!!

After a couple of 80-50 brakes on the highway I thought I was good to go.

Squeaks are back after a couple of commutes.

I did a couple of 60-40’s yesterday (clear road, no one behind me), and it’s a bit better. But the brakes are still not happy with me.

I just really need to go for a DRIVE!

Thank you! I have about 4500 miles on the car and it is still squeaking. I will try to pad them as you suggested and hopefully that will do it.

#1 annoyance on this M3. Had a ton of other M3's and this is the first to do it so terribly.

Thats a downer...lol. Its beautiful here today and I took the M for a spin and despite some aggressive driving and braking, the moment you come to a slow stop, the squeal monster rears its head !!! I guess the IS pads are the way to go if folks do find a huge difference

I completely agree with u. I dont know why, but our brains are automatically programmed to equate squeaky brakes to driving a beater car. Having this cool M and pulling to a stop light with squeaky brakes really goes contrary to that picture

Been my experience too. I’ve done ridiculous stops even activating the ABS and no luck. Within minutes the sound is back. I’ve resolved to just getting different pads eventually.

Oddly, I have only a slight squeal, at certain stopping speeds from the right rear. Otherwise, it's been quiet. Not like my Porsche, that makes heads turn every time--from the squeal, not the looks!

Brake squeal is normal and you shouldn’t have to replace them. My car is 4 months old and I experience brake squeal here and there. I think this goes for all high performance cars, Porsche made a video about it a few years ago: https://youtu.be/fUNHb9O52WQ

I think the more you drive you may notice it more. Once the honeymoon phase is over, it might come back to annoy you I didnt think about it much until last month or so and its getting on my nerves the more Im aware of it. Sometimes ignorance is bliss

I am going to find time to put the 359M’s and new Pilots on this weekend. When I do that I will scrub the rotors.

In a couple of other threads people mentioned scrubbing the drill holes with a brush to remove any accumulated pad material. Perhaps that is why it is so hard to get rid of?

I will report back.

Yup!

Can you confirm that build up in the holes is contributing to squeaking?
