How good are the standard brakes on G80 M3?

This going to sound crazy…

I remember being next level confident with my MK7 GTI; it had the Golf R brakes on the performance pack GTI. Even my VW Corrado from 1992 had confidence inspiring brakes.

I was not super confident with the F80 brakes so I'm not inclined to push the G80 and late brake.

For normal driving it's fine…

Anyone push the limits a bit; hard brake above 100 MPH?

Any quick fix improvements without a huge investment?

Recommendations; fluids, pads, better brake lines etc

The stock brakes are amazing, I've done repeated full force braking from 120+ mph on the track and it has held up lap after lap.

That steels on the G80 are mega, you will not be let down. While they don't have my favorite bite point and can be difficult to modulate at lower speeds (not progressive enough), their performance is strong. This is coming from a guy who's owned a 991.2 GT3 with PCCBs.

Dude; so great to hear this!!!!

I've been going really light on the brakes not really pushing them.

Great to hear the real life reviews

Thanks!!!

They're great. Sent my first G80 into a sharp corner WAY too hot, brakes saved me - and transparently, out performed what I thought they would.

I recently did at BMW track day at Thermal, CA. Granted we only did about 6 laps and had carbon ceramics but having never pushed my own car like this I can tell you that the stock car handles like a champ and I had a lot of confidence hitting the brakes at approx. 125mph

Ditto this except from 150 mph. I did put in Castrol SRF fluid before hand though.

Steel brakes are excellent for spirited street driving! If you plan on doing more than that ie repeated triple digit speed hard braking, best to upgrade to track pads and fluid. You can remove the brake duct vents to keep temps down, just keep in mind that street driving probably doesn't need it, and if you have track pads, they may not get hot enough for the street with the brake vent ducts removed.

I’ve tracked a lot of cars over the last 20 years and took my G80 to the track for the first time recently.
The stock brakes are very impressive, on this track day the car was 100% stock with MP4S road tyres.

I regularly broke from 130mph to 55mph down the back straight, pushing the car very hard (was fastest car of the day by a few seconds - despite many being more focussed cars with track tyres).

You will absolutely not have an issue with these brakes on the road. By the end of the day I was getting some fade, afterwards I’m also getting some noise, which suggests the brakes overheated a bit.
Next time out I’ll have track pads and upgraded fluid.

Track conditions really are 10x as taxing as spirited road driving, it’s just not comparable. This car won’t break a sweat on the road regardless of driver.

Thanks everyone I really appreciate everyone sharing their personal experience on how the brakes perform in various conditions. It's great to know the brakes will be there if I need them in a high speed situation

The OEM brake pads will serve you well when DD'ing the car, even at occasional "Mexico" speeds. They have more performance than you will need. However, if you want to track the car more than a couple of times a year you will absolutely end up having to switch to track oriented pads.

The problem is not performance or stopping power. They will be up to the task for as long as they last. Very good performance for a street pad. The problem is with the wear rate, and longevity. The rear pads will not stand up to repeated hard track braking. The fronts will do much better, but the rears will literally melt before your eyes. I went through 9 sets of OEM rear pads (at great expense) and not a single set lasted more then 1 day on track. (average 6-7 sessions of 25-30 minutes each). Several times I had to leave early because they were <3mm and the backing plates were coming up fast. Fortunately there are now several pad options out there, so do your homework. Not all are alike.

My point is that these cars have an Achilles Heel when driven on a track, and it is their brakes. Whichever pads you decide to go with, watch them like a hawk (measure them) while at the track.

OEM brakes are great for daily driving, but they are noisy—Thats why I switched to the EBC Yellow pads.

How long have you had EBC Yellow pads?

How do they compare to stock pads?

I'm sure you had all of your traction/stability controls turned off, right?

Actually, the first few times I took the car on track I left all the controls turned on because the car was new to me. As I became more familiar, and comfortable with it I turned them off as this is the way I have driven all of my cars on track. To be honest, there was no noticeable difference in wear rate between on or off. The controlling factor in the wear rate is the small size of the rear pads. Of course a true "track pad" will last longer than a street pad of the same size, but you are still asking a lot of a small pad when used on a nearly 4,000lb car.

Did 3 track days on stock pads/discs and all good so far. The entire brake system is stock on my car. Works great. No fade, no issues. I did have issues with a set of rotors warping early on but no issues with the 2nd set. I do have the fender vents off. No issues with premature rear brake wearing either. Driving style does factor into it, if you don't warm up the brakes or ride the brakes like when street braking you may have more issues. Also, cooling down is just as important. I am a big proponent of driving cars stock and making incremental changes when needed. I plan to do more events next season so will upgrade to ebc 2 piece rotors, ebc pads and upgrade the fluid to motul or srf when I do my brake flush before track season.

I just came across this today and thought I would drop it on some of these brake discussions. It is the best solution yet to the brake conundrum of these cars on track, if a bit pricey. If nothing else, there is a lot of excellent information in here.
