I don't think I will wait for 1200 mark either! It is extremely difficult not to get on it, especially when I keep getting challenged.

Haha I feel you. I just picked my car up from the service @ 950 miles. The tech said if the oil reminder is orange or red in color it's time to get the service done. And yes, it's very difficult not to send it 😆

In the US, I have noted a number of you guys tend to pick up the car at the port and drive them back home. How do you vary the speed / engine speed on the highway? Or more precisely, how much do you feel you have to vary?

This is the first M I have had to take on a long trip (in the UK anyway!) before I have had the run-in carried out.

Also getting some mild burble on deceleration that wasn’t there prior to service. Exhaust breaking in or do they in fact load a different tune?
No tune, that's an "urban myth". You probably just didn't notice it before, but if it has actually changed then chalk it up to things loosening up. Break In Service is a change of engine and differential oil, and resetting of the "service schedule". Baby does like to trot though doesn't she?
Don't forget the handing over of the money

The way I managed this was to stay off highway as best I could and also put the transmission in different shift configurations (button on shifter). This way if I did find myself on a long stretch of a continuous RPM, like a highway, I could have the motor at different RPMs during that time. I likely thought too deep about this, but it was what I felt I could control the best with break in driving. I suspect what the engineers are trying to get owners to avoid is driving the first 1000 miles at 1900 RPM and having the new engine experince only one type of load stress during that time.

Thanks that's what I suspected, I think I am thinking too much as well! I think I just have to enjoy it and hope for some traffic!

I don't think you guys are actually overthinking it, putting your first 1000 miles on the car all in one shot at a constant, low rpm is probably the worst way you could break it in.

This thread is informative. I should take delivery locally (fortunately) at the first of the year. I’m trying to reconcile the recommended break-in against what some recommend to drive hard and seat the rings, or whatever.

I’ll be taking it easy. My 2003 has 80k miles, and 3-4 years of that was long commute. I’ll enjoy it but will struggle to get the necessary miles.

In sport + you'll get the burbles on high rev downshifts and lifting off the throttle after high revs. Likely you didn't notice it existed because of babying the car during break in.

I had 535 miles on my car before taking a 845-mile trip from SE Florida to middle Alabama (including mountain roads driving). I had pre-scheduled my break-in service for my G82 with the local BMW dealer and had it performed while I was up there with about 1,280 miles (shout out to Century BMW in Huntsville Alabama as they are really great people). Great service including providing a video of the mechanic walking under and around my car while pointing out everything he checked including discussing whether he saw any metal filings while changing the oils, which he said was clear. He and the service advisor both told me to enjoy the ride back without having to worry about break-in, and that I would notice a difference in the car's power.

Quite frankly, I really have not felt any difference since the break-in during my return trip, as I felt it was really good before the service. It also seems to sound the same, although I have not done any red-line driving since.

Break In Service done - Steering Squeak Present - But don't have car

Finally had the break-in service done at 1979kms after 8 months (lots of travel in 2022).

BMW had a service bulletin re the squeak in the steering column. They carried out the recommended fixes, but still there. BMW are replacing the steering column apparently. Have left it with them for a week or two while the parts come in as I am off overseas again for work so will not need the car.

So, need to wait to try out the Launch Control.

Late break in

Does it matter if the break in service is done at 1400 miles instead of the 1200 mark? Just due to dealership availability of when they can get the car in to be serviced

Thanks

There is absolutely no difference in power or sound. I'm guessing he is referring to the fact that you can not drive it as hard as you want.

Just got my break-in service done last week, no issues except for an oily hand print on the hood/fender I noticed afterwards. I took a walk down the street to get coffee while I was waiting and I thought I saw my car leave. I caught my car coming back in

Is that EG? I'll probably be going this week, or next, for my 10k. I need to go, this week, because this weekend, I'll be going to some cars and coffee events, and I'll probably be driving a few hundred miles Im about 200 miles out from my 10k, which I already have 10,080.

Detail Maniac is having an open house, this Saturday on the 12th, at 9 am. 600 Sunbeam Ave, Sacramento.

Hosted by BMWCCA, Sacramento Chapter. I'll probably be posting it on the Bimmerpost Event Calendar.

I just rechecked the BMWCCA GoldenGate chapter event, and it's in Moss Landing, but that's 200 miles one way, from me. Skipping that one. So, just detail maniac for me.

The servicing dealer told me that BMW gives a 500-mile leeway for break-in service. I called them before taking an 800+ mile trip on top of the 500+ miles I already had on the car.

Call your dealer to confirm, but that's what this BMW dealer's person in charge of warranty services said to me.
