I hope they add rear wheel steering. That will help with road and track performance.

Doesn't the current M550 have it, with the DHP added?

It does, yes but the full M models have not had them yet. With a heavier car, it will make a significant difference.

Who knows....maybe it will be slower. However, I would never be caught dead in a Tesla....even if the thing were fast enough to time travel. I think they are just 2 different types of car (M5 vs Plaid).

Yea also very unlikely it's going to be running 1/4 mile in 9.3@150mph trap speed with 700hp and around 5k lbs, forget about even close to plaid performance.

Guys guys guys....come on now. The M5 has always been marketed as the pinnicle of a German luxury sports sedan. It's designed to chew up the highway at Autobahn speeds.

It has not and never will be a vehicle meant for the track. Sure it will perform flawlessly through mtn passes and on B-roads but not the track.

Yes, BMW has added more M-bits like the CS for buyers but that's just them trying to satisfy the other 1 percent who want bragging rights.

The problem for M5 owners is finding the circumstances to actually take advantage of what the car can do. Racing from stop light to stop light on the way to the grocery store gets boring after awhile. Accelerating down highway on ramps is fun but short lived due to lack of room. The vast majority of owners don't actually want to own an M5 but want to lease it. Consequently they also won't want to road trip in the car either. It's a shame really because wide open highways with no LEO's to be seen is the natural habitat for this car.

Basically people want a slow car that they can drive fast The M5 isn't it and neither is the M3.

Buy and restore an E39 M5 with a 6 speed.. It'll be more fun to drive.

Here's an unpopular opinion... complaining about BMW making heavier cars is getting old. Times have changed: consumers are more environmentally conscious, gas prices are ridiculous and there government regulations. Personally, I'm thankful BMW is still very invested in the glorious B58/S68 and not following Benz with only 4 cylinders.

I'll start by saying - I'm going out with a "last ICE" blaze of glory - got a 23 M5C inbound in a few weeks that is absolutely loaded to the gills. I'm purchasing instead of leasing because I keep telling myself - last ICE, this is the keeper. (and I love everything about the F90).

That said (and for background, we have a Tesla in our garage to). I'm really intrigued by hybrids right now. I live in an urban area - metro Orlando. 90 percent of my trips are within 5-6 miles of my home, I don't commute to the office much any more. Do I take a second here and there in my local trips to enjoy the go pedal? Heck yes. However, 95 percent of the trip is stop and go, lights, etc. And so in this case - using battery power for that part of the trip actually makes a lot of sense.

Then, when it's time to play (or go on a family trip to the beach or whatever) the lovely S68 is there to carry you along and you can swing into any gas station and reload in just a few minutes.

I've been thinking lately - I wonder if in 10 years we're going to pull back from EV - not because it's not a good idea, but the infrastructure at least in the US is just not there yet (nor are the charging times acceptable).

And so - if that happens, and Hybrid is a way for us gear heads to still get our V8 happy noises and make the regulators happy - well then why not.

I'm pretty sure BMW isn't going to let the G90 out of the barn if it performs worse than the F90 in any category.

Hybrid is absolutely the platform everyone should be focusing on for longer term sustainability. I think it's smart of BMW to be all over it.

True, but seeing as it's a performance hybrid I'm pretty sure once both motors are engaged (in other words, not driving short distance on full EV mode) it will be nearly as bad as f90s on gas with the s68. If that happens in 10 years, hopefully also with lower gas prices I think both f90s and g90s will still be a great option to have at that time but at least f90s will be a less complex drivetrain and less things to break over time.

Just like with the new C63, either go full electric or stick with the combustion only option. Hybrid doesn't make sense.
The electric motor compensates for low end torque, making the whole package more responsive and they can shove a bigger turbo in thanks to that. Also, EURO7 emissions is very strict and BMW had to move to hybrid to meet it, plus gas mileage with this hybrid is a factor as well. The whole Europe is moving towards hybrid first then full on electric.

What engines are you referring to? If it is tuned, and fails, how is it a problem with the engine? :
The gen in the F10 M5…

I'm not sure if there haven't been mechanical changes since then.

I also mentioned, "often times tuned", because I've heard of them happening to stock cars and modded, one of which had a Dinan tune.

This might've been the wrong forum to comment on & ask. My apologies.
I think there have been significant upgrades to both the V8 in the M5 and 550 and also the I6 in the 540 (previously 535). You'd have to look around the forums to find the changes but they've been discussed plenty. Hope that answers your question, at least a little.
I'll look into it!

I know the B58 is a major upgrade from the N55 both in terms of going to air to water cooling & being a closed deck block now.

230 Sport Evo????

A lot of folks getting bent out of shape on the weight of modern BMWs!

I for one would prefer lighter cars, and therein, don't care about 600, 700 or more HP. I KNOW BMW owners, some of them anyway, would love a lighter car than is usual these days...we see them in this thread. Sure the M4 CSL is lighter, but it isn't that available.

In short, when's the G42 230i Sport Evo coming out!!?!??!?! That B48 will take 300+ HP / 350 lb/ft of torque easy, and pull that car's weight down to 3300lbs or so...and option a manual. Hell, they'd sell every one of those before they were built! It would be such an easy car for BMW to build right off the shelf.

I can't wait for this thing to hit production. All the worry warts will be lining up to buy one, or wishing they could. It's a mile hybrid. They are doing the bare minimum to make it meet European regulations. It helps with start/stop, running accessories and barely anything else. Why is there nonstop panic that BMW is going in reverse at all times? As far as I can tell the vehicles they produce keep getting better and better. There might have been a dip due to supply chain covid crap, but overall they are producing better vehicles now than they were ten years ago. Yet everyone shits their pants over any new rumors that come out. "They're destroying the brand!" Calm down, you'll be trying to figure out how to buy one of these soon enough!

Exactly that, but the owners get offended so easily that I decided to hold off on that comment. That M3 wagon would be drop dead gorgeous for me. If not for ug… sorry🤣
