Long post. You've been warned, ha.

tl;dr
I want a highend handsome smaller than my M4CX stick of dynamite with an engine that doesn't need help from a stereo.

Always looking for a new car to share garage space or take its place if the numbers added up. Absolutely enjoying/almost in love with my 1 year old M4CX. Not perfect, not even close, but it's one of my favorite cars ever. I consider it a GT, not a sports car. A little too big coming from a 2 series considering I have no kids to haul, prefer 2 doors, but not allergic to 4; M2 not option which I find a bit too juvenile in its styling.

The GTS 4.0 almost came home since everyone told me it's a better daily and I can option the interior (prefer brown/tan/lighter), but it doesn't hit the emotional bullseye. I don't daily. Work from home. Average about 10,000 miles per year.

Which leads me to the GT4. Doesn't come in my choice of interior colors, but the sound is amazing, and I like the exterior better than the GTS4.0. And I have seen low miles non-absurd pricing.

Do you think there's too much overlap with the GT4 and M4CX for my needs? I don't drag race, am not into 0-60 numbers, but do miss the EV instant on. Will the GT4 have too much missing down low or feel anemic unless being driven at 9/10th? I think my M4CX is a little laggy down low with an amazing topend with its compression and large turbos, understandably, so I'd like to avoid a motor that's too track-centric.

Sorry for the long-winded post. Should I go OCD on the GT4 and start shopping or should I consider others? Or should I wait for the M5 Touring and be the child-less guy hooning a station wagon?!?!

The GT4 is my attainable dream car. I still kick myself for passing on a slightly used one in a perfect spec years ago. Personally the thing holding me back was the fact that it was just too much to spend on a car that I know I'll only drive about 2500mi/yr. I still want one though, and maybe one day I'll finally take the plunge.

Will it overlap too much with your M4? Not necessarily...though I would probably rather an M5 (or even just a 5 series) for my daily if I had the GT4 as a toy.

I bought a new 981 GT4 and owned it for three years. Very different car from an M4. But go drive one and tell us what you think.

If you get a GT4 it will give you a good taste of whats it like in the Porsche world. I'd bet you'd want a GT3 soon after.

GT4 chassis is tremendous. Most confidant of all the cars mentioned above. However, once with the gt4, then the gt3 is going to look better and better, and you'll start wanting that.

This may sound blasphemous, but the c8 can be gt-lite and not bad if you can get one at sticker; it is a lot of car for half the price of a gt3.

I had two C8 allocations over the years and passed. So many in my area and I'm not a fan of the overall styling. Great car for sure. And my z06 allocation was YEAAARS away. The styling is a little too overt for my needs in this town.

You should have just purchased the Porsche to begin with. Go buy a 992 or GT4 and be done with it.

I just picked up an M3CS. I also have a GT4 that I love. I may not keep both but it’ll be hard picking which to give up. I do commute and the GT4 is honestly fine for that, even with a 6MT and buckets. M3cS is much quieter inside, much better audio quality, slightly less worry about front lip bc not quite so low. GT4 chassis is great and makes some incredible sounds as you’re driving around.

A 911T would be a nice middle ground. If I didn’t track and wanted a 10k mi/yr car with a stick, some speed and oozes timelessness, that would be high on my list.

M4 and GT4 have some overlap but would be very different driving experiences for you.

What do you think of the CS, as far as driving excitement and experience vs the gt4?

As someone who had a F80 M4 and ultimately sold it cause it was boring driving it day to day. It was comfortable, and powerful but a engaged driving experience it was not. It always felt numb and too insulated. I did take it to the track and enjoyed driving it there. Maybe if I had gotten it in manual I would have kept it but, but BMW manuals just aren't very enjoyable to drive. I found this out with my e90 335i, and e92 M3 which is why I picked DCT for my M4.

I recently test drove a g80 M3 base with manual and to be honest it felt more of the same, too refined, too smooth, too quiet, and too luxurious. No doubt it's a hugely capable and fast car just not an engaging one. The manual wasn't great either, and the CDV was very noticeable. I didn't have too much time to spend with it but could never get the 1-2 shift smooth.

I finally had a chance to test drive the GT4 and it's a completely different experience. You always feel like your in a sports car and everything about it is engaging and a pleasure to interact with. All the reviews that call it one of the best drivers car is true. Steering felt direct, precise and full of feel and reminded me of my old e90 335i. Clutch engagement and shifter felt very mechanical, connected and super easy to drive. One of the best manuals I've had a chance to drive. Engine also sounds good and doesn't sound fake like most cars nowadays where everything feels piped in through the speakers. I bought the GT4 and will be cancelling my order for the G80 M3.

I came on to the forums to write almost an identical thread as this, and saw yours, lol. In a very similar dilemma.

I’m also going in on a year on the M3x and have been just looking on CarGurus and AT at GT4s. Man those do not want to drop in value it seems.

I love my m3. The color, the power, the ability to drive it year round. But at the same time, I don’t need 4 seats and I’m not a fan of its size for a “sports car.” I’ve always enjoyed shorter wheel base coupes. My wife has an x3m40i that we use for when we go places as a family.

I’ve been highly considering a gt4 or a M2CS. I also don’t drive daily but I have a 2-3 day commute of about 60 miles total. I don’t plan on going to the track, and since my commute is mostly highway, I have a feeling the m3 just is just better overall. The G80 is just so damn good, very hard to really get something better for the price.

Friday drove a GT4. For my local roads and never tracking it and my opinion/preference in power delivery and styling it was a hard pass. For the money my M4CX checks more emotional and visceral boxes. And it turns out I like a small back seat.
I've stared into a stranger's GTS 4.0 interior and it made the GT4 interior even more uninspiring. Obviously you don't buy a GT4 for the interior. Our route had some front end scraping anxious moments (the owner didn't seem to mind that badly); where I live and my regular routes it'd be nonstop scraping.
THEN.....my friend's swanky neighborhood bbq had a new 2023 911 Turbo S (Aventurine paint, tan interior) and 992 CS (white with black interior). The 992 body style stops me in my tracks from all angles like my M4 does from the front and back (the sides is often Accord/Mustang depending on lighting and view angle), doesn't make me cringe like the C8 variants which offer so much for the money, and being able to get a non-black interior seals the deal.
The CPO coupe C4S vs C4GTS vs 911GTS ad nauseum internal debate. Live in snowy climate, I'd drive it year round with proper tires, have learned don't need AWD. Vic55 and the few objective owners on this forum are more than qualified to be toy pimps. Maybe I'll find one of the aforementioned with realistic price before BMW releases a hybrid M car.

I’m with you on the 992’s beauty, which is why I bought one myself. The Cayman body style just doesn’t resonate with me either, regardless of which variant is being discussed. It’s a great car though for those who like it.

I have both cars. And I can say overlap is really small in my opinion. The GT4 is much more of a drivers car, it is loud and a little bit on the rough side. Driving is more analog especially with the 6 speed MT.

One more important fact: the GT4 is small. You can toss it around at narrow backroads, canyon driving or alp passes.

Especially compared to your old RS6 Avant! Will the incoming GT3 replace the M4 or GT4?

The RS6 was like a boat in comparison . The GT3 will replace my beloved GT4. Decision was not easy: I was on the waiting list for a Spyder RS when my local dealer presented me the opportunity to get a GT3 Touring in December 2023. Was always a fan of the GT3 and now a dream comes true .
