Good question. They paused it in the beginning of the pandemic and I assumed it would be back, but they just canceled the whole thing. Strange as the Welt was designed to deliver cars too.

It’s not canceled for people in EU, only NA, and IIRC, they said it wasn’t cancelled because of the pandemic, but because not many people were taking advantage of it.

Yeah I heard the same. But I'm wondering what it was costing them to continue to offer it despite the low take-rate.

I think a combination of low awareness (manufacturers don't really seem to advertise the programs - anecdotally, anyone I ever told about it was shocked it was a thing) and dealers not thrilled about offering it (apparently a shit ton of paperwork), it's no wonder take rates were low.

The m340i is an incredible car and an amazing daily driver. But in my limited time with the m3 I'd have to say it's better in literally every way except fuel economy. Even comfort - I find the suspension more compliant and sophisticated than the m340i, plus the merino leather seats are much softer than the vernasca leather in the m340i.

Performance is of course a step up, however I do notice the torque comes on more progressively in the m3. In the m340i the torque hits earlier and feels much more like a traditional turbo charged car. Granted I haven't really pushed the m3 since I'm still in break-in. The steering is also quite a bit sharper. Whereas the m340i steering felt a bit vague and numb, it's much better in the m3.

This isn't a knock on the m340i as that's a phenomenal car. It's just praise on the m3.

An amazing post and story. Absolutely gorgeous color combo and I'm sure it was worth the wait (although nerve racking for sure as well). I too knocked off a bucket list with my 2020 M850i custom ordered (took BMW two times to get it right as first delivery was a failure so 9 months in total to get the second one landed).

So many parallels as I too only bought Japanese until I tipped my toe in the BMW water with my wife's 2017 X5. So when it came time for me to finally buy my dream car (20 plus years in the making) BMW was on the short list and waited for the 8-series to launch.

Congratulations and great write-up! PCD delivery is certainly the closest thing to ED (which will always remain among my most cherished memories) that we in NA have right now, and your post definitely has a ED-vibe to it.

Back in 2004 when I bought my E39 M5, the only other color combination I considered was Oxford Green/Caramel, which is very similar to your car. While I ultimately decided on Sterling Grey/Caramel, your combination is very classy.

they’re both a great experience, I did ED back when I got my 15’ F82 and following year in 16’ did PCD with another F82, good times, Now next step up is to do the same with porsche hopefully

Got to see this tonight, and it is awesome. Only got see under parking lot lights but this color has a nice pop with the metallic flake. And tartufo goes perfect with it. Didn't care for that interior in pics, but is beautiful in person.

I stand corrected, thanks! I wish they would bring it back to US customers. I rented a C class wagon when we were in Munich and drove to Austra, it was awesome. Doing it on my ordered BMW would be amazing!

I think part of the problem of not many people were taking advantage of it because they made the program not as good as it once was when it was 7% off and you can negotiate down to 10%. Then they changed it down to 5% off and there was less negotiation room. I still kept doing it though.

When I initially inquired about ED in 2016 and then 2019 dealers refused to do business with me because I wanted ED so I gave up both times.

The reduction in the discount was maybe a contributing factor, but on the other hand, there were dealers out there that were doing decent discounts. I was able to get ~12% off when I did mine.
