930Nm (686 ft-lbs) to tighten, up to 1,600 NM (1,180 ft-lbs) to break free. You also need a torque wrench capable of tightening it and a breaker bar long enough to loosen it. Even then this thing will be a PIA to put on and remove with those insane torque figures.
Meanwhile the G80/2/7 all have floating calipers in the rear which means to swap out the rear pads you need to take the rear caliper completely off. I wish BMW spent their $$$ developing fixed rear calipers instead of this. |

I think it is cool but can also be a pain. What is you need AAA? Would they have the tools to help you out? Are we as owners (prospective) expected to own these tools to change our wheels? What about going to our mechanics and not the dealership...would our mechanics have these tools? I would think the mechanics would but what about the other scenarios?
Looks cool but may be more trouble than its worth. |

Gad you're excited for this. I'm not sure why my comments would surprise anyone.
I've worked on cars my whole life, when you get into the 100's of ft-lbs to torque something it's no joke. Even with the right tools it takes a monstrous amount of leverage and effort. You can seriously get hurt if you're not careful. I only see this being useful if you're in a race where you go through multiple sets of tires. Most people that track their cars don't. They will however swap out wheels and/or brake pads before getting on track. The added time to change out your wheels is not an issue since you're not in the middle of a race yet. Having to remove the rear caliper just to change pads takes longer than swapping all four wheels. |

So center-lock wheels as an option? They look cool but like Tag said, on a street car they're a PITA... just ask the Porsche folks.

I had centre locks on my 991.2 911 GTS and they are a pain in the ass, I had a few flats or a few track days and when they needed to come off you needed one hell of a breaker bar!

This is super cool looking option that I would instantly skip. I've seen people changing center lock wheels and its not worth it imo

That's an insane amount of torque required to remove and install.

Umm, thanks but no thanks! The Porsche centerlocks already are a pain at 450 ft-lbs to tighten. Removing them is a major hassle compared to standard 5 lug wheels. When I removed one of my centerlocks, I could swear the breaker bar was going to snap (but fortunately it didn't). I can't even imagine having to deal with 685 ft-lb versions.

I thought it was a new center cap! Now I see it's a way to keep aftermarket wheels from fitting. Nobody wants to buy or haul around a 6 foot torque wrench.
It does make sense as an alternative to wheel studs for racing applications (additional wheel retention), but it's a very expensive alternative. Sorry BMW.

This is great. Pit stops gonna be so much faster.
Side note: If you have seen any NASCAR races recently, there were a few wee bit issues early with wheels coming off but they apparently got it under control. |

Porsche service manager here. 🙋 Do yourself a favor and skip the center locks. If you're not going to the track with a full pit crew, they're nothing but an expensive pain in the ass. They actually take more time and effort to remove than normal lugs, require the use of a very expensive torque multiplier that nobody or any no non-dealer will have on hand for service needs, you need another person or a brake applicator "bar" to hold the brakes on hard when retorquing them, they have lock pins that fail and often go unnoticed by inexperienced owners, they require regular inspection and lubrication, they are made of metals that are extremely susceptible to fading from exposure to environmental conditions and the even the mildest of wheel cleaners, dealer techs hate them, and they're expensive wear items to replace at $350ish a pop with replacement intervals as part of the normal maintenance schedule. Bottom line is they look cool (until they fade and the teeth are inevitably managed from removal/reinstallation), but everything else about them sucks balls. Wait until you get a flat tire on a Saturday night in the middle of nowhere. You're really going to regret checking that box for the next 48 hours. Hard pass, even for a track rat like me.

Looks cool but dumb as shit on a street car. Whenever Porsche would send me a survey regarding my GT3, I'd always ask for the option to upgrade to 5 lug.
Center locks also require a service interval. More so if you track your car frequently. Then you gotta buy the big ass $500 torque wrench. Plus a breaker bar.
