first ever track day in the G80
I went to Streets of Willow (CW) this Saturday for the first time (ever) in the G80. Incredible experience. Car was completely bone stock and handled great. No issues.
The instructor was really impressed by how capable the car was (even at the hands of a mediocre driver like myself lol). Best lap time was 1:30:15. My only complaint was that the P Zeros started to lose a ton of grip after about 5 laps or over 150F, but perhaps someone with more track experience can speak to that or why that is. Anyways, let's get to the good stuff. View post on imgur.com View post on imgur.com

Very nice! It seems like you had a great time!
M3s of all generations are the perfect jack of all trades. In a single car you can tear it up at the track and then drop your kids off at school, pick up your inlaws from the airport, etc etc The tires that come with the car are not designed for the track. There are some track worthy tires that are perfectly streetable, like the RS4, RT660, RE71, A052, etc etc. Those will maintain their performance with more extended track use and are friendly enough to drive every day |

You need to manage your tire pressures. Buy yourself a good tire pressure gauge and let some air out when they over heat
The turn to jelly when hot and pressure gets too High PZeros are perfectly fine for someone doing their first or occasional track day. No need for Track tires at this point. Invest in your driving skills first with more track days and instruction Track tires will over heat too and need to their pressures to be managed carefully also |

I also kinda realized I made this mistake after the fact. Was running 33-32PSI cold so probably like 37-40 hot *facepalm*. What pressure do you run cold before hopping on the track?

I realized I was not managing my PSI correctly, but still in my newb opinion I agree. These P Zeros overheat/degrade very quickly on a more tight/technical track.

You do have the pressure and temperature monitoring screen on the car - isn't it one of the default views in Sport mode?

Yup I had it open I just have a poor memory lol. So you're shooting for stock temps (33 - 32PSI) while the tires are hot? I guess I figured the cold temps were already factoring in some buffer for heating up.

Tire operating ranges are dependent on the weight of your vehicle and the tire optimal grip temps.
The optimal temperature is static so the manufacturer would specify the right hot temp, then you need to take temperatures across the tread to see of youre over or under inflated. Hi temps in middle too high, etc.. Cold pressure is just a reference starting point. I.e on my Michelin cup2 the optimal temp range is 180-200. And pressure for the g82 load range is 32- 33 psi hot as provided by jackson motorsports In order to achieve that, I need to start at 26 cold. Another way is to start at 30 cold and continuously air down as the tire heats up. When the tires get to 220 and higher they have much lower grip, so temp management is key. Also, the in car tire temps are about 15 degrees lower than tire surface temps. The in wheel sensor is reading air temp inside the wheel. I have cup2 connects with the sensors on the tire and they measure hotter always. So you need to add about 15 degrees to what tpms reports Edit, you should also chalk you shoulders to see if your wearing to the right spot, too low add pressure, too high, reduce.

I was at SOW Sunday running CW (Saturday was CCW)! It was my second track day on my practically stock G82 with PSI Midpipe, but I've been to SOW and regional tracks many times in my F80.
I usually start at 28 cold and then adjust to 33-34 hot after the first 3 laps. On street tires, every 3-4 laps I do a cool down lap, minimal brakes, minimal speed to cool the tires a bit, especially if it's starting to get greasy. Monitor your temps and pressure immediately after each session. Anyway, SOW is a really great technical track, and even better now that it's been re-paved! Try CW next time to approach the chicane from the other side... very interesting! I managed a 01:27.79, beating my modified F80 M3 CS by almost 2 seconds. The G8X is GREAT on the track!

Yes only the midpipe. Secondary cats and resonators are deleted. Stock muffler. The mic is on the rear bumper so it sound a bit louder than it does in the cabin or 50 feet away!

For my track day, temp was steady. The F80 and G80 both do oil cooling very well. It's the brakes that need help.

About the driving - Here is my never driven it, back seat driver take..Apply salt liberally... it looks like you can go faster through the first sweeper, stay left and open up the entry and late apex the first turn. The chicane complex you're pulling under 1 lateral g, I bet you have more grip here to use - go faster! Same through sweeper #2 before the hard right hander and use all the track, you should be on power through that entire right turn throttle steering out to the edge of the track. Back straight you're babying it! a lot more speed there to get through those sweeping chicanes and try not to punch the throttle at the end. Last turn before pit straight looks like a late apex where you want to get the car pointed down track quickly and almost oversteer it through, you should experiment with a wider line early and get back to power mid corner to improve your top speed down the front straight. Also looks like you lost traction right at the cone perhaps its track defect.. Are you driving it 2wd? Nice laps..

I agree with everything you said. Turn 1 I am too slow. I think a small lift will suffice, I'm actually braking into it. Turn 2 I was too much to the right. I need to be more left. Turn 3 and 4 has a lot of grip left I've gone faster through the bowl on other laps. It's actually a double apex turn and I'm conservative through it. The blind chicane is tricky. I've spun there at 100mph before so it's psychological. I've gone from braking into it to lifting into it now. I need to go to throttle maintenance and work my way up to powering though it. The following hard left is a fast corner and I babied it that day. The last turn into the front straight I had been playing with all day. How far left can I go before I'm just making the track bigger than it would be? Later in the day, I found a mark on the left of the track to hit before I start turning in for the late apex later and was a few tenths quicker. I think I can get a 1:25 with these tips in mind. A 1:22 by the end of the year and I'll be ecstatic! It always frustrating yet educating to watch these videos. You see all the mistakes and what you should have done! That's what makes it useful and addicting to go back and try and do better.
