Ugh.. This thread turned into r/finance, Im getting bored. Can we go back to people trying to flex? That's way more entertaining.

Two points:

1) I spend my day autopsying people who are dead before they’re supposed to be. Everyone reading this could be killed tomorrow. You have zero idea when it’s going to happen. If cars are your passion and you can afford a reasonable payment while still saving for retirement, go for it. Sometimes happiness is worth more than dollars.
2) Listening to you big money flexers quibble about 0.2% differences between loan rates and investment returns is hilarious. If you were *really* that serious about investment returns, you’d be shuttling yourself around in a used Prius.

1) Valid point

2) Not the best take. You can own performance cars and be wise with investments.....And its much more than 0.2%, try 6, 7 or even 8%.

Why do you care how others choose to pay for their vehicles? I suspect you have not lived through some of the wild economic times some of us have. 80’s economy with double digit interest rates, dot.com crash, 2008 meltdown.

High returns are rarely guaranteed. If some folks have the cash and want to purchase a sports car that way, so be it.

If you want to finance everything to optimize your return, so be it.

To each their own.

everyone has their own finances

personally i have taken loans and bought some cars outright. there are so many variables with it that its pointless to discuss. I would just say that if you plan on financing a 'toy' like a bmw, porsche, ferrari... you should have enough liquid cash in stocks or savings to cover the entire purchase at a moments notice.

i just bought a civic last year. with interest rates the way they are it seem moronic to pay 3k just for the right to borrow 27k. If interest was 1.4 like in 2012 when i bought my GTR i'd finance the whole thing.

Bold of you to assume that I haven't lived through the dot.com and 2008 meltdown.

Most of us, me included are specifically responding to the "If you can't pay cash for the car, you can't afford it" dumb comment.

You need enough salary and savings so that the cost of purchasing and owning the car does not cause any stress.

This is the way.

Cars are like kids. It’s never the right time and you’ll never have enough. To me a depreciation payment shouldn’t be felt. I know my 95k otd car will get 50k on trade in 3 years.. plus plus plus. Owning just about any nice car costs 15-20k a year if you’re going to use.

Could you get a car that loses 5k a year and do something better with the extra 10-15k? If the answers no. Congrats on your new car.

As a lawyer who sees bad stuff and death happen to people all the time, I agree with this. One needs to balance enjoying life while preparing for the future. The key is balance….

agree with you there. once i started residency i saw how short life really is and can be. people coming to the hospital in their 40s and finding out they have metastatic cancer with no prior symptoms or family history. life is too short to always worry about saving.
