PS4S with BMW star VS without

Will be getting PS4S soon, but local discount tier don't sell BMW star ones. What's the main difference between the two?

Honestly I don't think anyone here can tell the difference if blind tested. Only professional racers.

I'm not a professional racer but I can tell how much better the star MPS4S are over the non-star. Get the star version.

I highly doubt that. So you are telling me you had both star and non star tires on your 2022 M3?? OK LOL

Reciting what the video posted above doesn't count.

As I've read on other xDrive threads, on Bimmerpost, there is a slight possibility BMW could void your drivetrain warranty installing the incorrect tires. Just a disclaimer. I didn't create it, I've just read it, on other threads.

I did read on an X5M thread, like a year ago, about someone replacing their star tires with non-star tires, and having an xDrive malfunction, and BMW not wanting to cover it because of the tires. Something to do with the non star tires causing the M Differential to slip more, causing an issue.

Don't shoot the messenger, I just read it somewhere, on Bimmerpost, at one time.

Order them from Tire Rack. Also comes with a free road hazard for 2 years. https://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires...ramic%20Brakes

Yeah, they could make up any excuse to void warranty claims. For most AWD systems, most manufacturers require setups with the same height or under 1% difference between front and rears. Subaru's with a full size spare for example, require rotation of all 5. The transfer case can fail due to the different speeds because fo tire size difference.

Probably a great thing to bring up with a SA next visit.

The Star tires are obviously a little more money, but is it really worth saving an extra $50-$75 just to install the wrong tires? Also, I hear the star tires have better grip on the launch. And that the star version of the PS4S, basically has all of the characteristics of the Sport Cup 2 tires.

Haha, holy shit. There's no such thing as "wrong tires" if they are an appropriate size. I call BS on voiding warranty because non star spec tires. Sure, if you install tires with mismatched diameter that's a different story, but c'mon.

It's not a matter of saving money, the OP says they aren't available to order. Makes sense with the supply issues going on across multiple industries. If that is his only car and he needs new tires, star versions are mon the out, he has no choice if he really needs them asap right?

Just to clarify, I would choose OEM specs over non. If there isn't any stock or go aftermarket wheels, what can you do? And I stand by what I said about people not being able to tell a difference in a blind test.

Price is not the issue but buying it locally with insurance is what I am after. I never bought it from tire rack, so not sure about their road hazard warranty. Biggest issue is lots of construction in my area and getting a nail is 120% possibility. But I may consider TR this time.

If I remember right, Discount Tire purchased Tire Rack...

I specifically said to not shoot the messenger. It's not my decision, it was just a quote from another thread.

Apparently, the warranty decision came from a SA at a dealer, relayed by the customer. The customer took to the forums to vent about BMWs decision to not cover the warranty based on the tires that had been fitted. Again, not my decision. Just passing on information that may or may not become a factor, down the road.

I haven't dealt with Tire Rack, either. But I just text a friend that has dealt with them, many times and you enter your zip code into the website and they can ship your tires to an authorized installer then you pick in your zip code at checkout, for the installer. All of the installation suggestions for my zip code are either Firestone, or Americas Tire, which I'm pretty sure is also owned by Discount Tire, but usually had better pricing.

No but I have a lot of experience with the MPS4S including track time and at the limit, you can tell how much better the star tires are. I don't need a video to tell me something I already felt. They are really really good street tires.

The fact that in the video, without driving the car, he explains how disconnected the front end is from the rear, almost like a fish tail, lead follow, I'd be sold on doing what I could do to get the Star tires

Also, OP before I forget, I'd check with the dealer, clearly they sell Star tires, and I've had more than one dealer price match the local market. Check the dealer. Get some pricing together for the Star tires and get them to price match.

Something about the alleged X5M warranty void due to non-star tires smells a bit fishy to me. I don't doubt that Limegrn read it, but just doesn't seem plausible without other circumstances that weren't relayed in forum-land. How about everyone who rolls on snow tires (or all-seasons) for winter? Certainly those don't have the grip of 300 treadwear max performance tires on hot pavement. Or how about people who put Sport Cup 2s on? Those have MORE grip than the oem stars. And I'm pretty confident that all of the above deviate much more significantly in terms of grip from the oem tires, than the difference between star and non-star of the same model/size.

In all the years that the internet has been fretting over mods and warranties and their tricky relationship with one another, I can't recall ever hearing (before this thread) that the new-car-buying public is limited to the exact oem tires only (which frequently aren't even made by the time a model's new manufacturing days are over).

I'm calling the story (not the messenger) BS. There must be tens of thousands of X owners that put AS, snows, track or drag tires on their cars and we have one story from a far off corner of the internet.

I did read on an X5M thread, like a year ago, about someone replacing their star tires with non-star tires, and having an xDrive malfunction, and BMW not wanting to cover it because of the tires. Something to do with the non star tires causing the M Differential to slip more, causing an issue.

Order them from Tire Rack. Also comes with a free road hazard for 2 years. https://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires...ramic%20Brakes
This has me intrigued. That would mean that most people that change their wheels requiring other then * tires will have a voided power train warranty.

I'm sure it's something that you could probably fight, but if you can't get step one, to even cover it, which is the dealer, you're just in for a headache, without lawyering up.
