And PPF would have most definitely helped. Not smashing the fender, but with anything paint related. This is how the PPF went, and the clean pic is after the PPF was removed. No other work done to it.
Wow thank you.

I love seeing that “after” photo. I’m amazed at how well PPF works in many of those cases. I appreciate you sharing. I’m about to show my wife and say “SEE! It *IS* worth it.” 🤣

It really becomes a no-brainer for these frozen colored cars when you factor in the cost of repainting a panel.
Absolutely, you’re right.

I’m part of the PPF cult. I used to spend a ton of time doing my own paint corrections and focusing on having amazing paint but it’s a lot of work. Especially having owned 5 black sapphire BMW’s. I do PPF day 1 now on all my cars because I can’t stand rock chips and scratches. PPF that thing!

One additional thought, your insurance might cover “falling objects” which seems like it’s the situation. You can potentially run this through insurance and save a couple bucks depending on your deductible.

It’s all about the installer. Even like the OP mentioned with those Lambos etc, it’s all about the installer. Find a 10/10 shop. Check their Yelp reviews. Get reviews from other people that have had work done by them. Get a tour of their shop before you decide to go with them. My car is 28 months old, with 16,800 miles on it, and the PPF is so well tucked, and rolled around all of the edges, you can’t tell from just looking at it, that it’s even full PPF.

Agreed. That’s exactly what I did.

I went with Yelp reviews to help narrow down my choices and tried to do my research from there. The installer I ultimately went with was an open book: gave me a tour of the place, answered my questions, etc. They had a customer’s Pagani that they recently wrapped and after that, I was sold.

They had my car for about 5 days, for a full PPF application. They texted me updates and photos every day and still keep in touch with me almost 6 months later.

Needless to say, I’ll be a customer for life.

That’s how you do it, for sure. Seeing their work, is the most important. I bought a bunch of OEM carbon after I had my car PPFd and they told me to bring my parts when they came in, and they would PPF them for free. Got my OEM rear winglets, side skirts, front lip and Project gamma grill, PPFd for free. Just like they said.

If you do get full PPF, look into a satin PPF. I saw the post above with their XPEL Satin application. Pictures don’t do it justice. It makes people do a double take, without screams “look at me.” lol I get a lot of compliments and head turns.

Here’s my Alpine in XPEL Satin:

I scraped mine pulling in my garage with PPF on, it took most of the damage. Still have 2in scratch though.

100% agree on PPF would have saved you. Sometimes it feels like the more careful you are, the more crap happens.

I got mine PPFed and not even 48 hours later, a metal rod kicked up a few lanes over and bounced into my lane. I swerved and it glanced the bumper gouging the PPF. If I didn't have PPF, it would have wrecked the paint. Best of luck.

Thank you, all of you have been extremely helpful in making a very difficult decision. Also, I’m assuming PPF and clear bra are one and the same. What I would really like to see Would be how the Satin PPF would apply to a frozen vehicle finish. Very interesting. Thanks again my fellow///M enthusiast.

It’s referred to PPF by todays standards. The term “clear bra” came from cars 15-20 years ago, that used to actually have removable leather bras fitted to the front of the car.

Naturally, it made sense to refer to it as a clear bra, as it mimic’d the shape of the leather bra, except it was a thin film that was permanently affixed to the paint. And back in the day, that left a lot to be desired. It wasn’t made from great material, and would be extremely be prone to drying out, yellowing and cracking.

PPF likely would have helped. I had it on my M2 that got scuffed in a parking garage. Took 100% of the damage and probably paid for itself. I had to cut away the bad parts with a razor blade, but the paint was completely fine.

i guess my take is… these are just cars. cars are outdoor things. dings and scratches are just part of driving a car in the world… i’ve got a few small scratches after 5 weeks of my new G80, and only a $10K full PPF (one quote I had gotten) would have prevented them. F that. A few days ago I got a rock chip in my windshield too…

it does suck, but I’ve learned to just not worry about it too much
