I came from a Z4 with ID7. I'll take ID8 in my G80 any day. It looks and feels more modern and seems very well integrated from the driver's seat.

The climate menu is responsive enough for me, and I usually don't mess with those settings much anyway. My only minor gripe is sometimes I can't tell if the heated seats are on and I have to go into the menu ...which might be the most prominent first-world problem I've ever heard of.

I just picked up my 2023 M3 Comp a week ago and have to say I absolutely love the bigger screen. The cockpit feels modern, comfy, clean, and very functional. My wife is a huge fan of the bigger screen as well vs. what we had in the F80 M3 years back (and the dinky one in my 911).

Have zero complaints about the car/tech so far

I really like the feeling of a traditional cockpit layout with essentials either in analog or digital displayed in their own purpose built area. The additional screen for other car functions like nav etc. off to the side or in the center console works well too. This, to me, has always given a sense of integration with the car. Aesthetically it pleases my brain. My 991.2 does this extremely well.

Those who have the new wide screen - and understand what I mean above lol, does the new screen remove some of that from the driving experience? The wide screen is no doubt full of gadgets and neat electronic wizardry. But is it too much? Especially sitting almost as an after thought in the cockpit?

Sorry if I lost anyone here. I have an LCI M4 on order and, well, am wondering.
I like(d) the traditional, analog dials, from the E-series or even F80. It took me a little bit of getting used to the iD8. I had the G20 (iD7) and my daughter owns the G26 (iD7)
Now, that I am used to it, the iD8 is not perfect, but light years ahead of 7 or 6. It is fast and responsive, it is clear and high resolution, a lot of things are programmable and intuitive, the HVAC controls that everyone is whining about are right there all the time (up and down) just like on all other iterations, although, in 10 months of ownership, I never touched them since the initial setup...

Is there a way to force it on? I use mine to calm my back even in summer.

I would think if you set the automatic setting to “Very High” it would be on most if not all of the time.

If I’m wrong, disabling the automatic program and setting it manually would absolutely do it.

When they’re on, there’s an indicator right next to the temperature control at the bottom of the screen.

Was going to mention the same.
My X5M50i has the older ID7 and I find myself thinking that screen is much smaller.

I had a newer Mustang I rented recently with a screen layout just like ID8 and was pleased about how large the screen was.

I don’t miss the buttons but maybe because I’m conditioned through my Tesla lol.

I’m used to ID8 and prefer it.

I owned a 2021 M340 and now a 2024 M4. Both setups are great but I prefer the ID8. The screen feels so much bigger (in a good way). I feel it's easier to get around and more mostly more intuitive than ID8. The AC controls would be my only gripe but it's a minor one. I don't find it to take my focus off the road much more than it did with ID7

I've had many cars with classic dials and all that. I love the ID8 massive screen. When inside, it feels very integrated. What is not to like about having lots of information available at your fingertips?

The best way to look at this kind of stuff and avoid being an old man yelling at clouds is to realize that the driving experience is being improved by technology. If they could have big LCD screens 30 years ago, they would, but it wasn't possible. Now its possible, so we get to have this kind of stuff.

Blows. Can’t stand non driver focussed gauge based dash layouts. I’m driving, not watching TV. I feel BMW did it to match Mercedes… they’re the ones that went that route with a huge ass screen across the entire dashboard a few years ago. Pretty soon we’ll just have videos of air vents swirling fake air around too. 🙄

Better get used to it, almost every brand will be doing the same...or just keep buying old models in suppose.

Thanks everyone. Seems a majority are assimilated and enjoying the technology. It's got me wondering further tho. What if we throw in another variable. If you love the new screen, do you own the 6spd manual or auto car? Is there a tendency for them to be related.

I can throw off your entire research in one post.

I love the iD8 in my base 6MT G80. My other BMW is an automatic with no screens at all. In both cases, I prefer them to the alternative. Though I would have gotten a manual had one been available in the 335d.

Of course there are drawbacks with ID8, but overall I really like it. I had a loaner with ID7 and to be honest it felt very dated. Like anything, you will adjust to using the new system because its here to stay so embrace it.

Oh man that's gotta be a strange feeling going from one extreme to the other. Especially driving the 335 at night. But I will say, BMW always did light up the cockpit nicely with that orange glow.

I've had a few E46's without screens. And have driven my parent's 1930 Model A. Yeah, we've come a long way.

My SO and I both had our ID7 cars serviced and for the first time had loaners with ID8. It was fun to spend some time with the big displays and we both liked it well enough. Voice control without logging in with a BMW account was utterly ineffective but I connected my profile to my loaner for the day (and then deleted it) and the voice control worked great for the heated seats and several other "buried in the screen" functions. I was very happy with the larger NAV screen display.

If/when I change out my ID7 car, I'd prefer to move to an ID8/8.5/9 car, if only to move to something different, but I'm not in a hurry to hop away from ID7.

My only real complaint about it may have been that I was driving a 2 instead of a 3. It was impossible to get the steering wheel positioned to the point where some of the driver's display wasn't blocked by the steering wheel. The ID7 driver's screen fits perfectly with the steering wheel, and that is a big plus.

Can anyone with ID8 on an M3/4 tell me if that's a problem with your cars?

There’s a right way to do it and a wrong way to do it. I’m not a electric vehicle person at all, but the Tesla Model S and the Rivian both have proper dash layouts with more than enough info presented to the user, but it’s setup right and not just a throw of a stupid big screen propped up on the dash like BMW did. I think the biggest issue I have with it is the fact that whomever does the GUI design on these and the gauge graphic layout absolutely blow at it. Not giving the user an option to customize how they want the stuff to look and coming up with stupid geometric shapes for the rev bands and other gauges just looks stupid. It’s kind of like the dumb ass move Audi did on the newer RS models where the damn revs are backwards/upside down on their digital gauges. Like who thought that made visual sense? 🙄 They need to hire better GUI engineers because fucking up an interface is far too easy, not only from a visual look aspect, but also from a usability aspect… and we know there’s already things on the new system that’s less accessible or ass backwards thought process. That takes away from the experience as well.

I'm fine with the bigger slab screen, but I do agree about the GUI (also didn't love the change on my RS5 either). I get it, the geometric shapes are meant to look more modern, but they just look cluttered and odd. I wish there was a traditional view with a more simplified layout or at least more customization. It is what it is though...I pretty much live with just my HUD and CarPlay so it doesn't bother me much, and the larger displays are welcomed in that setting.

Hey Rog, just like in a few previous discussions, the world moved on (in tennis and in modern design). Looks like you are in the minority with your "GUI engineers" bashing...and we all know, they will not go back to old ways, so, either adopt, or you'll end up driving yourself crazy over nothing...
