What's the perfect family car to have with G80/G82?

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
I have a Toyota Tacoma as my DD and the lease is about to end. I am using my G82 mostly as a weekend fun car. We have a baby on the way and I am looking to buy a new daily/family/road trip car. Some of the options I have in mind are x3 m40i, x5 or to go to the EV route with Model Y performance.

I am curious to find out what the fellow G8x owners have as their second DD/family car.

The M3 Is the perfect family car. You don't need an SUV because you popped one kid out.

We are on our 2nd X3 3.0 x drive and I absolutely love the car, especially this 2023 model year.

X3 M40i was nice. I had a 22 for a few months. Plenty of room for the kiddos and more than enough torque to get you moving of the line.

I have a G80 CX and my wife drives an X3 S30i. We only have one baby at the moment so our cars compliment each other quite well. The G80 is a weapon on the road and the X3 is the comfortable cruiser.

Similar situation here

With a toddler a g80 manual would be the “sports car”, and I have an rs6 performance on order atm as the daily

Currently im driving a new f-pace svr I ordered just before my little bloke was born, and wife now has a new Maserati Grecale trofeo.

The svr is a great suv, epic v8 sounds and German beating interior and infotainment imo, but I just struggle with the enthusiasm.

Having always owned sports sedans, I initially liked the suv benefits but now it’s wearing off and I look forward to going back to sport sedans/wagons, least of all washing it is a ball ache, one suv in the garage is enough

My wife daily drives her Tesla Model 3 and I daily drive a Honda Accord.

I agree with Forzanerazzurri , an SUV is not mandatory.

This is the other half of our garage. M3C on one side, minivan on the other. Honestly, I love driving it. Plenty of power, big, reliable, just perfect for the ages of our 3 kids right now. Don't fear the minivan! Enthusiasts can appreciate and embrace all types of vehicles!

2) Go with X5 if needs to be an SUV. I like the size, suspension and B58 TU2

1) 4Runner TRD Sport before it goes I4 Turbo Hybrid

3) Model Y performance is a good call for EV

Order of my preference

The answer to that question is very much based on your family needs plus a massive dose of subjectivity, but I'll bite for fun.

My DD is a Lexus IS 350 F-Sport which is great as a more comfortable and plush sedan (i.e., none of the road harshness of the G80).

But for us (and probably most people), you need a car with space. We have a Highlander for that - lots of cargo space, 3rd row for the occasional visitor and tow hitch for my bike rack.

But we now have a Lexus GX 550 Luxury+ on order which will replace the Highlander. For us, this is the ultimate family vehicle to accompany the G80+350IS. Its a go-anywhere vehicle with lots of space and can go on long trips.

Having said all that, I can see how the G80 can itself function as a family car. It is a 5-seater after all.

The G80 likely has enough room for a small family, but loading and unloading a car seat will be much easier (especially on the lower back) on a SUV. We use a X3 M40 and it has served us very well while still being fun to drive to accompany our G83.

Having a take home vehicle from work our M5 is used for pleasure trips only. We have a Tacoma that I use for running errands and grocery store trips. My wife now wants an SUV. Last month we test drove a new 24 Macan GTS and it is high on the list for the wife. If you are considering an X3M40I go test drive a Macan S or GTS.

That is a fair question Pool Shark. The main reason is really the styling. I've been waiting for an update to the GX for longer than I can remember, so after all that waiting, I'd rather have the new design. The outgoing model is rock solid for sure, but I just can't buy the tail of a very long in the tooth design. I really like boxy SUVs and the new one fits that bill nicely.

When coupled with a G80, I think a family vehicle needs to have functionality that the G80 doesnt offer. Ie significant cargo space for DIY projects and possibly a third row for extended family or friends. I dont see to point of a compact suv like an x3. The X5 also doesnt cut it as cargo space is on the smaller side of mid siz suvs. Of vehicles mentioned thus far. I agree with Honda Odyssey, and 4 runner. I can think of multiple options like a Telluride or Pilot. If seeking something more thrilling, it gets expensive like a Rivian.

Agreed - I was commuting with my little one in my F82 and did a lot of trips with the family. All was good

Unless you have 2 or more kids, I don't see why you need to "upsize"

Agree with above. M3CX is a perfect daily for me and we have two kids. Works for all seasons as a daily (for example today, 8am hockey practice with 15cm of snow yet to be cleared).

I could see how the M4 might be tricky though depending on age and size of kids. Any chance you would consider switching to an M3?

My wife drives a Q7 which really does best for longer trips when we’re away for a few days. But for daily duties it’s just a bigger more boring car.

We have a 4Runner. Perfect for taking on vacations, carting stuff, taking dogs to the vet etc. It's reliable, cheap to maintain and comfortable on long rides.
