+1 Big thanks for all the information. Unfortunately, I will not be able to test the pads I had made until Feb 19th at VIR, hoping for good enough weather to run.

Looking forward to hearing more.

Question for this thread since y'all seem to be the ones actively tracking your G8x: given what you now know about your G8x (power, handling, rear brakes off a Schwinn bike, windows that roll themselves up on threshold braking, etc.), would you pick up another G8x if tracking was a priority use for you?

There seems to be so many great attributes but a few annoying ones, as well. I'm coming out of my F80 CS that has been rock solid on track, easy to work on, decent on consumables (but not great)….but I've had 2 F80s over the past 6 years & it might be time to move on.

TL;DR - If I am being honest with you...no. I would not be in the G80 platform as a track car. I am now in the market for a spec race car to scratch the itch. I will continue to track my G82, but I will need to moderate usage below where I'd like to be.

If I had a trackable F80 where that was my primary use case (tracking 1-2 times per month), I would not sell it for a G82. I actually had an F80 before my G82, but it was a 440 AWD, so converting it to a track car would have required way too much surgery, so I got into a G82.

The platform is new, so the aftermarket hasn't caught up yet which is causing some short term price pressure on consumables.

Rotors are 700/set per axle (predict mine last 1000 track miles)
Brakes are 400-1000 for a 2 axle set depending on your brand. (200 track miles)
Tires are (at least in OEM sizes) are $2500 a set. (500 track miles)

The car needs front some suspension work to get a reasonable amount of track capability. ( I did camber plates, others do lower control arms).

The Brake by wire and pre-crash systems do interfere with time on track and you cannot disable them. You can avoid them, but not if you're trying to go fast, and the car doesnt react well when you are out of tolerance (power reduction, tripping pre-crash deployment)

Brake system requires resetting the computer for certain things (moving your pistons a lot, flushing fluid (not a huge deal with a code clearer i.e. bimmerlink), but the computer is in the way IMO.

lack of options and long lead times mean I need to keep 3-4 sets of brake pads and 2 sets of rotors and order tires halfway through to keep moving. At these costs, thats a lot of capital sitting in parts...

I love the car, love it as a daily, and its fun on track, but its been a chore to track it and continue to be expensive to keep it on track for ~150 laps a month during the season without anything breaking.

Even a CSL or CS will have the same cons, but perhaps a bit lighter.

Im looking for a Spec Boxster (cheap + liquid market), or a race built Cayman (GT3 part compatibility), as a next step in track driving for TTs and time trials.

Thank you so much for this input - I don't want to hijack this thread any further than I already have but this confirmed a gut feeling I had as I was swapping out rotors on my F80 over the weekend to prep for a 3 day track weekend @ COTA next month. You going to bring the G82 down to COTA anytime soon, beachBmmr ?

Lone Star BMW CCA is going there in June, but I cant make it then. I would like to drive COTA, but perhaps in someone else's car.

I was under the impression that "Track" M Mode disabled all of the crash deterrent systems. In fact, when I checked the iDrive and it does say all that stuff is off. In Sport mode, it remains partially on.

Note that my understanding is that this setting is only available with the "M Drive Professional" option which also includes the ten stage M Traction Control and the M Drift Analyzer. Two things I will probably never use (all TC off, and I don't drift). Luckily after a little debate, I checked that box anyway, but had I known Track mode was only available with this option, I wouldn't have thought twice.

In all honestly, the ability to turn that stuff off should have come equipped no matter what.

It doesn't disable pre-crash sensors. It turns off
all the dynamic stability control stuff.

I had to double check today, because this is pretty disconcerting.

Here is the "M Mode" menu and the intelligent safety screen. Notice also the light around the car icon in the dash is yellow in "Sport" mode, but OFF in "Track" mode in the second photo.

…your windows will still be rolling up and your seatbelt will be retracting on track. It doesn't shut that off. Unavoidable. Someone is working on coding it off.

Oh, so that's what you meant by "pre-crash sensors". I thought you literally meant the automatic braking and lane keep BS. So you've experienced the window going up and seatbelt tightening even in "Track" mode?

Yes, hopefully that can be coded out soon although it would be nice to keep it for street driving, although not really necessary.

Nope but he is working on it. Alex from Alpine can code some Competition settings like steering and suspension but I don’t see the value on the Base

Has anyone tried the 9V battery trick on retracting the electronic parking brake for pad changes at the track? Wondering just in case my laptop with ISTA stops working and it would be nice to have a low tech solution for it.

Yes, works fine. Mind polarity, and it controls direction. Get bimmerlink on an iphone, it has the brake retract function too

So I messed around with some abs and a heat gun and molded a deflector for the drivers side. Will see if I get less brake wear on this side. I experimented with a leaf blower and the brake duct, and the air flow when wheels are straight goes right into the rotor hub without any modifications, so not sure of there is any incremental cooling to be had, but time will tell.

Before anyone asks, the duct aligns with the vent when the suspension is loaded and not hanging. Nothing rubs lock to lock.

Took several wheel on/off & up/down…
