Reading through the press material, it seems like they invested very little in weight savings for the base and Competition variants of the G8X. I am wondering if they are keeping weight saving reserves for the CS and CSL variants.

Grilles aside, what a major letdown. The weight, styling, aura, tacky options, stats on paper...I am honestly upset that I followed the release this close for a year plus.

Nice job ruining a vehicle that was once the benchmark for decades, BMW.

The E30, E36, E46, E92, and even F80 are rolling in their graves.

So no more dual clutch transmission?

Anyways, what the hell is BMW thinking, this thing is horrendous!

Crippling the manual version, then putting in an 8AT with 4WD instead of DCT really tells you everything you need to know about modern BMW. They pay lip service to enthusiasts, but their actions have said otherwise for some time now.

Possibly upgrading after LCI, when the quirks are settled out.

Obviously current owners will have a biased view on the relative value of their asset but technological innovation of newer models has historically led to depreciation on the older ones...stating the obvious here but let's celebrate the release of the G80?
Nothin to celebrate here partner. Even if I didn't own every m3 since the e36 I still look at this car and think it's not for me at all. They're goin a whole diff direction here and to me it's total crap

I've heard that the opposite of love isn't hate -- it's indifference. Be glad for the hate for what you've done, BMW. It means people care deeply about BMW, ///M, and the M3 and M4 brands. Now do something about it.

It's one thing when an enthusiast forum gets out the pitchforks, but it's a whole other thing when your normally adoring global YouTube audience soundly rejects what you've done.

I'm more disappointed in the direction of your ad campaigns than the new grille design, impossible as that may seem. The ads are objectively terrible, though I won't take time here to deconstruct exactly why. I can't believe something like this even happened. How?

Ultimately, the following people are accountable for this and ought to own the consequences, good or bad (recognizing I may be wrong, they ought to get credit if credit is deserved). There are probably more. And no, it doesn't matter that decisions may have pre-dated these people assuming their roles; leaders gotta lead:
  • Oliver Zipse -- Chairman of the Board of Management of BMW AG
  • Domagoj Dukec -- Head of Design for BMW
  • Markus Flasch -- Head of BMW M (to the extent he has any influence over design, which he may not)
And especially:
  • Jens Thiemer -- Head of Brand Steering and Marketing for BMW
  • ...And whoever runs the global ad agency BMW selected
Signed,

Not Indifferent
I like the design of the G8X but agree with you on the marketing.... I have been a stakeholder in creative reviews at this scale and this (and the whole m town theme) really feels like the agency was allowed to run wild with the brand identity. No one stood up to say "hey, I get the artistic pop but how will this connect with in market consumers", it is like the modern interpretation of the m art car heritage took over the entire brand instead of being a cool one off. Even the M next concept I was scratching my head. My assumption is the agency was directed to be different and was able to convince them anything less radical was business as usual.

But we know they can do it right, contrast these G8X ads to x5 and especially x7 launch ads which were dead on target, really well done and expressive to both target demo and aspirational cohorts.

Having owned the last 3 generations of M3/4 Coupe, I really despise how every generation gets larger and heavier. E46 was kinda just right, IMO. Not a perfect car, and each gen is faster, but there is more to driving enjoyment than specs.

I like the value and utility aspects this car has always represented. I’ve always preordered like a year in advance, but held off on this one. I’m going to let this sink in for a while. It will probably grow on me, but first time I’ve been unenthusiastic.

Sorry, but I am a naysayer. I simply cannot buy a car that is that fugly in the front. I am glad that I ordered an M5 a few weeks back to replace my current M3, which looked great.

Nice to see that instead of a G80/G82 M3/M4 CS, GTS, or CSL model they have introduced the M3/M4 Deadpool Limited Edition in a range of colors as long as you like Red/Black... a la Starsky & Hutch's Red Ford Grand Torino with the white Nike swish.

Now we know where that Quad Stacked Centered Exhaust spyshot came from...M Performance Exhaust Option.

Look closely at the driver's side kidney grill. Massive radar sensor on the bottom. Not exactly centered and symmetric.

I do like the boy racer trunk spoiler since it is so low profile.

Learn to say "My 3D-printed aluminum cylinder head is cracked. WTF??"

Bonus: Free carbon fiber ball sack bolster between your legs in the bucket racing seats. Just what I needed. Joe Achille spends 5 minutes on it, especially the reaction of female M3/M4 drivers.

Pretty sure Legos could have designed a much sleeker ///M car out of square bricks. Very appropriate that the G80 M3 video includes a chain saw.

Cheers

WHY there is a huge torque deficit between regular and competition models? Other competition cars have same torque numbers. wtf?

300 lb weight gain over similar RWD F80. Add another 200-250 lbs for AWD.

WTF were those marketing videos on youtube? Only a short film with Clive Owen can save them now.

Not mad, just Disappointed. I guess they'll have suckers buy the early versions then they'll bring LCI and special models to make more money and fix some of the shortcomings as they always do
