Will I be disappointed if I trade my F90 M5 for a G82 M4?

Thinking of trading in my 2018 M5 for a new M4C. I was hoping for a faster lighter car. Not sure that I will actually get that experience with new M4 since it reads heavier and slower getting to speed than I expected. Thoughts?

Well...it depends what you're after. Seems like you have a perception of it already. So do you want it because it is still a novelty right now or another reason? I know it is much heavier, but it does have better power/weight ratio. If you're looking for faster 0-60, why not take a look at the new C8 corvette. About the same price specced appropriately and a much better performer. But you do lose practicality.

I have a 2019 M5 and am planning to get a 2022 M3 when my lease is up.

If it were all about 0-60 times it would be a no-brainer: M5 all the way.

But in day-to-day driving you can't use all that power. The M3 has more than enough power to "feel fast" and for me, it's all about the 6MT. If you've not driven a manual before it's hard to explain- but it transforms the driving experience. Even just ordinary 30-40mph drives to the grocery store can be fun when you're rowing through the gears. Paddles just can't compare.

To top it off the M3 6MT will weigh about 400lbs less than the M5. That will make corners even more fun. Can't wait!

I'd keep the M5 unless you don't mind taking a serious bath on depreciation. Only reason to swap would be to get back in a manual, a very valid reason admittedly. Both cars are heavy so I don't think you will notice much difference there. M3 is smaller but still a very big car to hustle down a backroad. No one has driven the M3 yet though, best thing to do would be drive a demonstrator when they hit dealers in March and your gut should tell you if it makes sense or not.

its not even out yet, besides a few driver reviews here and there so its hard to say if you will like it or not. maybe once it comes out and we get some real world info/videos/forum reviews you will be able to make a better comparison. Or wait to drive one yourself and see, driving dynamics and impressions are so personal, im sure you agree

The M4 is not going to be faster on the street and on the track it could be a toss up, however if you plan to track frequently the M4 is a better choice of many reasons. It will be and feel lighter. If that’s enough to give up the far superior engine in the M5 remain to be seen when we get a chance to drive it. I suspect it will be but I’m far from sure of that myself.

The weight difference between a M3/4 is 5 kilos, so I don't think it will be a huge difference. I thought the M3 would have been heavier for sure, but surprised they were able to basically match.

Very true but the OP is choosing between his M5 and the M4C

Oops my apologies, so many threads I thought this was a M3 vs. M4.

But it's incredible how heavy the M3/4 have gotten. Weighs as much as a M5 a few generations ago. Actually spoke to a guy who had a E60 gen M5 and my M2C was only a few pounds off of that.

M2 is the new M3 and the M3 is the new M5. M5 will be the large sport sedan once the M8 dies off given draconian sales numbers...already getting pulled in the US.

Absolutely! Guess BMW finally made a M7 in the guise of the M5 😂

I drove by a local dealer yesterday to see if they had a G22 4 series since I haven’t seen the new 4 shape in real life yet. Sadly they had none.

Honestly there is not a single BMW that excites me even a little from looking at them. The 8 series including the M8 should be on top of a list of cars doing that but it just isn’t. It’s plain and boring looking. The front is the big let down as it was with the i8.

Actually the M5 does have some presence but not the 8.

Nothing like the old 8 series or the E60 M5 days when the cars just made me drool in the show rooms. I suspect the G8X will bring some of that back. And to be fair a visit to the Porsche dealer is pretty similar, only the GT cars styling evoke the right emotions from styling alone. The Taycan is the worst but the non GT 911s aren’t much better. Plain and boring stuff until you get behind the wheel...

haha i drop into my dealer to check in every time i pass by too...feel like i need to see it in person.

Agreed with you on all those points! For me the only BMW cars that get me excited that they currently make is the M2CS, M3/M4 CS. While the M5 does have some presence imo it doesn't have that eyecandy appeal. But that v8....

The Taycan analogy is spot on and agreed that the non GT cars just don't scream special and barely turn heads, but I guess the Taycan is the ultimate stealth super car. The GT styling really just makes the car scream "look at me i'm a track car" while say even if I see a GTS 4.0 my reaction is ha! look at the gutted turbo 4 posrche as nothing makes it standout other than a 4.0 badge.

Not sure if you had seen this M5 crush a ferrari 488

I think I know what you mean. I decided I needed at least a part-time rear seat instead of a C6 Vette and wanted a sports coupe or sedan as a daily driver.

Thought about the new 992 and even my wife gave the go ahead on that, but I nixed it because I could not justify $140K and then there is the reality of what a midwestern daily driver really needs to be. Spent months looking at absolutely everything out there. Considered the Cadillac CT5V, but something just didn't fit.

Drove the M340i and really liked the ride and performance for a daily driver, but decided that even though I like the styling, I thought it was growing a little stale.

I like the idea of EV and the Tesla performance, but the Teslas need a styling refresh.

I saw the pics of the i4 but decided to wait a few more years for batteries to be sorted out. Then I saw the release of the G22 and decided that the styling was fresh for a BMW, and unlike some others in here, I can still see the heritage in it that I loved about the E30. So I went on the limb with saw in hand and ordered the M440i.

OP, have you driven an M2? Seems like you are looking for a smaller (~1,000 lbs less than the M5), and a nimbler car. The M2 is a whole different driving experience. You could probably do an even trade right now for an M2CS. Go drive one.

Coming from an M5, I think you're gonna love it. Think of it as a 'raw', stripped down specialty version of the M5

So glad everyone is giving their honest opinions on a car that hasn't even been tested or reviewed yet. BMW always gives conservative numbers. Yes its heavier but the current M440i xDrive is doing 0-60 in 3.8 secs when BMW claimed 4.5 secs i wouldn't be surprised if the new M4 does it in 3 secs flat. My opinion, wait till the damn thing comes out go to dealers and see for yourself.

I was trying to buy a corvette before all this new M3/M4 business and you could be waiting a loooong time for one of those People will probably be in their G82 M4 xdrive long before someone that ordered a Corvette today could get one

I think it'll be slightly lighter than the M5 you have that is 4,400 lbs no?

It will do less output from the factory as its an twin turbo inline 6 vs twin turbo 4.4L V8, but until the driving reviews come out, i'm reserving my judgement and giving the BMW the benefit of the doubt that their engineers are not stupid and have never made a worse car generation over generation.
