Standard headlights opinions

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
Wanted to see if anyone had any options on the standard leds. Any regrets not getting the laser lights? A lot of us just buying a dealer model don't really have a choice and I wanted to see how much of a difference it makes.

Also do the standard lights have cornering and auto high beams?

I have the standard lights with the shadowline on my 21 G80. On a 21 to get the laser I would of had to add the exec pack which I did not want. Plus it would of held up the car even more with the additional recall. On 22s it became a stand alone option. If it was a standalone option I would of added them to my spec. But I dont regret not adding the exec pack to my build.

I have the standard lights. They do have auto high beams. It was showroom M4 comp purchase not an order. FWIW I asked the salesman about the laser lights and he said they are toned down so much here in the states due to antiquated govt regulations, he doesn’t think they are worth the price.

Until you code them, then they are great!

Ordering a car = pick lasers. No brainer.
Lot car = take what they have. Wouldn't be a deal breaker for me.

Lasers make a big difference in the look of the car IMO. I would opt for them 10/10 times, but knowing the times we're in, if there was a car on the lot that ticked the rest or (or most of my) boxes, I'd look past it. I'd never order a car without them though.

Well, I've got'em on my UK M3C and im yet to see the difference. The standard LEDS are pretty immense anyway and light up the road particularly brilliantly.

I've driven along over 45mph along dark country lanes opting for auto-highbeam and havent seen a difference at all yet and I have tried. I've wondered if ive been doing something wrong.

I need to get the manual out for sure!

I agree with what your saying and was my thinking as well. Do they have cornering?

How well do the lights perform for you on for example dark country roads? Better than your average luxury car?

For me the looks are not that big of a deal breaker. For some reason I like the lights like this, and only at some angles do the drls look droopy.

My biggest issue is performance. I do a lot of driving on unlit roads and want to make sure I'll be able to see well

I have the standard headlights on my m4c and they're absolutely awesome. I love the beam pattern and think the auto high beams are the most "intelligent" auto high beams that I've ever used. My car was a lot car, but I have no regrets. The standard headlights should not be a deal breaker for you. I think they look great.

Awesome ! I also have a convertible lot car coming. Stuck at the port though 😭

Skyscraper grey but other than that similar to your spec.

Where are you located? Do you plan on putting winter tires on your car? Looks like your in the Midwest as well

M3C, custom order, and I got the standard lights and no regrets. Laser lights do look cooler in my opinion but with the limitations in the US minimizing the features of the Laser lights I didn't feel like I would be missing much. The standard lights do have the auto high beam feature which is awesome and still have a nice look to them. I spend the money I would've spent on the laser lights for the camera packing and would do that over again in a heart beat.

Also for what it's worth my car flew through QC and I had no recalls on my car, could've been related to my light choice.

I have the standards. When I was ordering mine, the lasers were a part of the executive package, which didn't want any part of it.

No regrets.

I don't even notice anymore. I only remember this omission when I read threads like this. Otherwise, the standard light are perfectly fine.

I don't think the standard light swivels to the shape of the road though.
Also, the US version is watered down because of regulations. But as others have said, all the missing attributes can be coded in if you are willing to go aftermarket.

No regrets. Ordered the car with the standard LEDS based on the ones in my 2020 Z4. Drive quickly & live in an area with 2 lane country (moonshine) roads and am not out driving my lights.

Plenty of range & spread. Expect they are equal to the USA laser unless you can code the lasers to Euro spec. As euros the laser should be brighter & have more range.

There is range & effective range. The LEDS for my driving style are in the effective range class.

Both cars have auto high beams which actually work much better than I expected. Use them for 100% of my night driving

I see a few people mentioning it here, so I'll just point out that while U.S. regulations have historically (and still currently for the time being) watered down headlights, H.R. 3684 (aka the Infrastructure Bill) which became law in November included a mandate that the DOT amend FMVSS 108 (aka the antiquated rule that nerfs U.S. headlights) be amended in no more than 2 years to allow for adaptive beams.

The TL;DR being that by November of 2023 U.S. headlights can more or less be on par with European features with presumably just a software update, no third party coding required*. Could happen sooner if DOT is quick or later if BMW takes a while to update U.S cars. Something to consider.

Here's a bmwblog article on it if anyone curious; https://www.bmwblog.com/2021/11/18/b...ve-headlights/

*U.S. lights still might have a lower light output compared to the rest of the world, even with this amendment. I'm admittedly haven't looked into that yet

The block code for this feature in the US market vehicle is represented by a three digit character within the vehicle's computer mapping (5AP- Decoding for no-dazzle high-beam assistance).

By using a bootleg copy of a factory-level software known as ESYS, you would then delete the said block code from the vehicle's programming, enabling Glare Free High Beam.

This is not something I recommend for a novice, so you'll probably be better off paying someone with the proper expertise to complete it for you.

The laser lights do look amazing and really makes the front-end pop and appear modernized.. Totally worth the $1,000 up charge, IMHO..

Too bad the US doesn't get the blue hue "scenic-lights" like the ROW does.

The blue version where accidentally included in some US spec "X" vehicles but BMW quickly issued a recall.

Laser headlights are a must-have.

Nice headlights make a HUGE difference.

Much more desirable to buyers too.

I have now owned both versions. Get laser lights even in North American form the output is better especially high beams. I could only imagine once they are coded how they will work. Lasers look much better also. I may try to get a set somewhere.
