2021 M4 Comp (G82) - Cold Start noises

Hey everyone, I have an appointment mid January for my car because it's making a temporary squealing noise 5 - 7 seconds after a cold start (not every time) now that it is colder (under 40 F). And it lasts for 20 - 30 seconds and then goes away for 24 - 48 hours.

I feel like I'm chasing a "noise ghost" here but if you listen to the noise, you'll hear what I'm talking amount.

The dealership says unless they can reproduce, there may not be anything to be done. So, posting here to see if there are any thoughts.

7800 miles on the Odometer, bought it April 2021.

Is the car in motion, in this recording, or is it just parked? Sounds like a bad pulley.

Sounds like a pully or belt tensioner to me. #dealervisit

The car is not in motion. This is right at engine start from a parked position.

Definitely appreciate it!

I'm glad I shared this here and will have the shop foreman check both tensioner and pulley.

I'll write back with an update by the end of January.

Happy holidays!

I’m hearing the exact same sound. Started becoming more noticeable once the temperatures dropped… will probably follow up soon..

Good to know. This was the other reason why I wanted to post this.

I assume you have a 2022 M3 xDrive?

Yes, 2022 m3 x drive. I’ve had it for 3 months now but only started noticing it a month ago. May be due to temperature.
A little off topic.. but if you are also in a xdrive, have you noticed any diff binding feeling? Mine went away when I changed to winter tire/wheel set up but wondering if this is common… (19inch square with vredstein wintrac pro).

I have a '21 M4 Comp (non-xDrive). Hmm, I would say make a specific post about that one, sounds interesting.

Update: Would you guess, the weather is warmer now, not reproducible by either myself or the BMW Service Center. I will have to wait until it is cold again. :-(

I have had both the squealing and the front diff binding sensation.

The squealing is when it is cold for a few seconds. Not worried about it. The diff binding is any time I am pulling out of a parking spot with the wheel at or near full lock. The front end of the car shifts and it is pretty noticeable. I havent decided if this is worth a trip to the dealer or if it is normal. My jeep with a front locking dif would do the same thing if it was in 4WD on pavement - which was to be avoided.

I take it you have the xDrive version then?

Sounds like I would go talk to the shop foreman at a BMW Service Center and/or a Genius to see if this is by design.

One question I have is, if you turn the wheel all the way til it stops, how far do you have to turn it back before driving off for the issue to not reproduce. I.E. find the scope/range of the issue.

If this is something you really want to discuss though, I recommend starting a new post.

Reviving old thread. Just noticed with the recent large temperature drop that my new 2023 is making this exact sound on cold start/idle. Was this ever figured out? I am scheduled to have my 1200 mile service on Tuesday 12/27 and also added this to requested service. If no response I will report back my findings.

I just developed this starting noise as well with the colder weather. Have a 21 M3 manual. Last winter even with cold weather I never had this issue. Currently have 15k miles.

My car is currently in service, they wanted to keep it overnight to diagnose it, do 1200 mi service, and correct my off-center steering wheel. I will report back what the sound is once they replicate it and correct. It echoes throughout my apartment complex when I start it -- embarassing! Lol

I just received notification that the car is done. They mentioned it was air noise due to my aftermarket intakes. I find that very odd since I have always had modified intakes on my cars and nothing like this sound.

Do you or anyone else have aftermarket intakes?

Interesting not what I expected. I have BMS drop in filters in the stock air boxes. Can’t imagine changing out filters would cause that problem. I haven’t had a chance to get to the dealer due to work schedule. Anyone else?

I have the same sound, just haven’t gotten to bringing it in but I’m all stock so I don’t see how that would be the case..

I was considering switching back to stock to see if it still occurs. I just don't trust the diagnosis quite yet
