G80 M3 Order - How does it work?

I spoke with my dealer last week, and he said that he has a modifiable order I can take for a 2021 M3.

- Is this basically a placeholder to get to the top of the list, that I can later change specifics on? I'm confused because I've seen people reference 'HEA' orders, where there's very little flexibility. Being told January production.

- If I do order via dealer through factory, are negotiations still on the table? Just kind of curious how all of this works.

Yes, at this point you should be talking about a HEA order, though Jan seems a little late for that, so they might possibly be talking about a deposit on a presumed normal production allocation? Anyway, if it is just HE, while it is modifiable, you're only talking about about the limited color and interior options you see in other threads, but you should be able to expect to negotiable on those. If they're talking about a deposit on an allocation they don't yet have, they might expect MSRP, but you could likely re-negotiate once the allocation actually comes through and before you take delivery as those deposits are refundable.

HEA cars cannot be modified except color
There are no allocations on non HEA cars so dealers don't even know what they are getting yet
