G80 M3 vs its Competitors

How do you guys think the G80 will compare to its rivals like the Alfa Giulia QV, RS5 Sportback and C63 Sedan?

From a performance aspect, I would expect to it to be better as it will be the newest at time of release. 510 HP could mean 122 MPH 1/4 Mile speeds which will be quick.

Now from a feel, looks perspective... can't speak to that until it's driven or seen up close. From the pictures, it doesn't look great... at all.

Autoblog did a nice "on paper" comparison for the M3 (and the M4):

https://www.autoblog.com/2020/09/22/...ec-comparison/

That doesn't address how they'll stack up in the real world, but it could be a good reference for talking points.

Audi now has the chance

I wrote this in another thread. I'm nott sure how far along the next RS 5 is in the development stage (I'm sure the chassis and main structural components are all locked in now). But they have this giant opportunity now to beat G8x on weight....

If I was the chief engineer there, having seen these weight figures, i would do anything and everything now to claim the throne from BMW - by spending all my resources and R&D on weight reduction (and to convince the board that it will make the greatest business sense)

You'd definitely need some data to convince them their will be a return on the investment. The thing is, it might very well be the case that, int the real world, a 3900 lb. RS5 doesn't actually sell any better than a 4000 lb. RS5. So the amount of money you spend trying to drop that 100 lb. probably doesn't do anything for the bottom line, and might actually hurt it. Or maybe not, but like I say, it's going to take some proof to make the business case.

Then on top of that, you pull money away from other areas of the car that matter more to the target buyer, so now you've put yourself in that hole, especially if your competitor shows a bigger improvement in those areas than you do.

This type of scenario is why what may seem like an obvious opportunity to folks like us sitting on the outside and looking in, isn't always the slam dunk it appears to be.

Don't get me wrong, I hope Audi and BMW and everyone else don't continue to make heavier and heavier vehicles every generation. But the reality is that this is unlikely to change. If you want lightweight, your best bet is the true sports car segments. That's where customers who care about weight tend to shop, and hence that's where automakers will spend the money on such measures.

I'm not sure either, but I assume that its at least 4 years away since we haven't even gotten the facelifted RS5 he in NA yet. I think it will take Audi some serious work to win over BMW fans because I always hear that they aren't on quite the level dynamically as BMW due to the understeer.

Garage List
2019 M4cs  [0.00]
Something tells me the trap speed will be closer to 123 for the RWD and 124-125 for the AWD (traction does account for [increased] trap speeds on AWD cars, even though the 1/8 to 1/4 mile MPG delta will be likely be lower due to power-to-weight).

I'm guessing 123mph because the M4cs has trapped 122mph and the RWD G8x has a more favorable power-to-weight.

The weight offset could hurt trap speed on the AWD model... but I think 123 could be real... 125 is a stretch for a 503 HP car.

given its RWD only at the start.. i'd be curious to see the 5-60 time that C&D clocks for all the cars they run through...

A few numbers to keep us thinking
F82 M4 CS: 3.9
W205 C63s: 4.4
Giulia QF: 4.3
B9 RS5: 4.6
F97 X3MC: 4.7

of the bunch, the X3MC have the biggest gap between the 0-60 and 5-60 time, echoing some of the common complaints about low end torque or "lag" ... we shall see how G8X fares

Unfortunately, the closest competition is F8X...

Correct. And the F80 missed the mark in many key areas for many of us. We were hoping for a return to glory for the M3 but so far on paper it hasn't come to fruition.

Once again this car will fall short. Its Not enough power.I would pass on this and get the 600hp hybrid Alfa Romeo GTV coupe. Better looks and performance. Interior might be slightly smaller and tech just shy of idrive 7.

Blackwing CT5-V and CT4-V will be competition. They sound amazing, have CF seats, 6MT, RWD, etc....

Seems like an enthusiast car all the way with the added practicality that a sedan can offer.

Ive been shopping Gen 2 CTSV and for a 7-8 year old car they are pretty sweet. The steering feel and magnaride suspension are on point and of course the SC V8 rips. It just lacks overall fit and finish in the interior.

The ATSV is almost amazing too. I just didnt love the engine.

Im definitely keeping an eye on the CT*-V. If it has steering feel anything like the newer Camaros itll be glorious.

Sloppy packaging and sub par interior + agonizing end to end dealer experience has always been prohibitive for American cars to me, but one should never give up hope I guess

On the flip side to that I drove a 2021 Kia Stinger GT2 today and I have to say it was nicer inside than an F80 without full leather. But honestly the F80 fell short to both Audi and Merc of that generation in the interior department.

The G20 M340s Ive driven have been a nice step up. I look forward to seeing a G80 interior in person.
