Exhaust Valve Controllers, Do they Actually Make The Exhaust Louder?

Curious as it seems like a popular mod guys are doing on their M cars

I know the OEM system acts funky and the valves do some odd stuff and do not open 100% at times but do these exhaust valve actually give the exhaust more sound levels and tone or is it mainly to drive in Efficient Mode and open it up?
With the aftermarket controller in the closed mode does it make the car more docile?

I am considering the DAHLER one but for $600 id like to know exactly what it will do for me.

I strongly recommend getting under the car and putting some zip ties on the valves to keep them open. It’s not permanent, and gives you the experience of what they’re like full open, all the time.

There is most definitely a difference. I had mine wired open, no controller, for a while, both with my MPE/mid pipe, and OE can/mid pipe. The sound is less restricted and more natural. BUT, you will likely experience more drone, and the cold starts are much more aggressive.

Stock valves do not open all the way; the valve controller will take care of it.

It's not a massive difference vs. stock open valves, but its a nice upgrade.

Just to add not only do the valves not open all the way but they software controlled to open and close at different speeds and engine loads. The biggest benefits of the valve controller is consistency its either full open or full closed.

My perception of the experience is that it's a noticeable enough difference to warrant the purchase. I have the DINAN ones on mine.

I just installed the Dahler over the weekend. I have a Fabspeed mid pipe as well. The Dahler made a big impact to the mid pipe.

Thanks for all the replies i am ordering the Dahler this week. On my car i notice when I come back into it from shopping il start it in Efficient, The engine software makes it get very loud as if the software is opening the valves partially on load then it goes away, this really bothers me and one of the main reasons i want to have full control. The software on these cars does some weird stuff with the engine idle and valves ive noticed.

Where did you mount the dahler box? I watched the Kies video and he shows placing the box on the drivers side rear plastic compartment under the bumper. On my car this compartment is not opened so curious where i would mount it now

FISH22 Is there any pictures or description on how to do this? If you always want them open this sounds like an easy and cheap solution.

Thanks!

Curious, any dyno runs with valves artificially open at lower rpm? I thought the other benefit of the valves being closed or partially closed at lower RPM was to increase torque / HP down low.

Just to be clear, the valves are never fully closed. It’s either fully open with a valve controller, or “closed” aka working as designed from factory so it’s variable.

In my opinion, the valve controllers don’t do much on a completely stock car. I would say the price isn’t worth the change in sound on a stock car. With downpipes and/or midpipes the valve controllers make a HUGE difference. I have downpipes and a single midpipe. When I open the valves the car is ridiculously loud.

Do you think just a single midpipe with valve controller would make a huge difference?

100%. That was my setup for a while and the sound was so much louder with valves open.

That was my exact setup before downpipes. Patrick made me a custom single midpipe.

Yeah your video is what brought me to Patrick! He's incredible—sent pics of the whole build process and shipped it out to me all the way in Seattle super excited to put it on
