The iDrive7 in my G82 seems like the right blend. I use the physical buttons for HVAC and the memory buttons all the time. Give me the large idrive8 screens AND keep the physical buttons and I'm happy. I love analog gauges, but those are done. Time to move forward.

I didn't think I would like the i8 screen (ordered initially before the switch), but now that I see it, I dig it. I don't care that the temp controls are behind some screen presses, but using the assistant helps: "hey gamora, I'm warm" --and she changes the temp.

That's the one aspect of modern cars that reviewers don't spend enough time on. Once you're used to how the Voice Control wants to be talked to, and what it can and can't do, a lot of the "buried in the screen" functions aren't items that you'll regularly search for.

I almost never use the iDrive controller or the touchscreen to browse my flash drive (with over 10k tracks on it) for the music I want to listen to, as an example. Two cars ago, I always did as the Voice Control wasn't great at the task.

Reviewers are great at being annoyed at the assistant speaking up when they don't want it to, but as an owner that's something you get past as you get used to your car.

The main reason I got M4 and not M3 is the lack of creativity in designing the new one piece flat screen. I personally hate it.

The small things like that bother me too, I never got a F90 because of the digital gauges and the ZF transmission.

Some point I'll be swallowing my pride and get a G80 LCI though as I don't see any better options on the horizon. Won't be going EV until its forced down our throats.

I’ve had my g80 id8 for a couple months now…and coming from an F30…I don’t miss the buttons at all.
Zero.
The auto climate control is awesome…never have to touch the temp controls.
Everything else is pretty much Carplay.

Also the display is glorious.
