Other thing to add here is that the new BMW manuals are a cake to drive. It's pretty hard to stall out and they're not cumbersome to drive even in heavy traffic.

Clutch is kinda springy though, but you can skip the Left leg at the gym.

As others have pointed out, the anti-stall and hill hold features make modern manuals pretty damn easy to drive.

I have tested this on a hill. Clutch in, car doesn't roll back, no gas, slowly let out clutch.

Car takes off smoothly.

Auto-rev matching is annoying when you can't turn it off, but it also makes driving a manual easy. That said, get what you want. A car is a lot of money and if you think you'd be happier with an auto, go for the auto. Who cares what anyone else says, it's your car, not theirs.

When was this anti-stall thing added? My 2014 F30 has the hill hold function but no anti-stall that I can detect as you describe. No rev-match either. Was this only on F80/82?

to me, auto trans falls into the "normal car" category, it is the same regardless if it is M3 or Tacoma.
there is no reason to buy an auto sport car if you can drive manual and there is manual option imo...
Holy smack; I thought I was the only person who thought that way...

For me if it's an automatic I'm looking at a lexsus ES 250 AWD on 17's grand touring tires...

Clutch in the new G80 feels a good amount stiffer and less "springy" I would say it's not as enjoyable in traffic. It's far from terrible though. My F80 has almost 36k DD miles, no issues and no complaints. I think the G80 will be the same

You drove it? Do you use a clutch stop in your F80 by the way?

If you get MT, get used to the idea you are not going to be the fastest off the red light. Any soccer mom in a minivan will quickly get ahead of you.

If you are looking to be "that guy" that gets fastest to the next red light, then get a the auto.

I love MT, and have accepted its shortcomings in traffic. Still, it is engaging to drive, and keeps me focused in what I am doing. I wouldn't do anything else. If sometime in the future I cannot get a manual transmission, with BMW or any other marque, I would rather get a Tesla, and be "that guy".

Heavy traffic has never bothered me with a standard. My hesitation is moreso on confidence in snowy icy weather, and distractions which need extra hands.

I did not use a clutch stop on my F80. Stock clutch and tranny. No SSK. Only thing I did was 3D shift knob which felt great in the hand

Clutch stop was a game changer on F80. My BMS clutch stop was $7 and made the clutch travel distance 1/3 less.

I've had a 6mt F80 for 5 years in LA traffic and its been a dream. My first manual was a 2005 Evo and the tech that goes into modern sticks gives you all the benefits of driving a stick with none of the drawback, auto rev matching on downshifts, auto brake lock on steep hills etc. I wouldn''t want it any other way!
