Enjoyed this video, quite insightful. Hearing that S58 screaming at high RPM at the end of the video was very cool

The oil cooler is completely exposed or was that just a test vehicle.

Thanks for sharing. Feels like we are finally getting a taste of the technical goodies we got with the F8x videos.

Chris Bangle said it best, "...BMW at its heart is an engineering company."

Fucking love aerodynamics. Was waiting on this and was not disappointed. CFD on cars is straight porn to me.

Now if they could just cut those damn vents into the hood and front fender arches already!

Also, this was fkn awesome:

Best one yet by a mile. Might be concerned about that exposed oil cooler though.

Great video. Interesting that nothing was said about the very prominent rear diffuser.

Ugly grill or not, DCT or not, repeatable max performance is what separates the M3 from its competitors made most apparent via the F8X platform. Cooling is performance. High altitude, high temps, N'ring lapping days what have you, the S55/DCT has proven insanely robust.

C63, RS4, Giulia Quad... one lap wonders. I hope the G can prove its mettle, but I posit that the overall weight gain is going to aggrandize the F gen even further as time passes.

Thanks for sharing!
Well said, very true.

The G has front brake cooling ducts, a big improvement over the F. Or maybe hey were necessary due to the added weight and power.

To me it looks like there is a big shield over the oil cooler with a circular cut out to get to the drain plug.

You can see it in this picture as well with a gloved hand working on it.

The oil cooler is way more in front of that. That big plate is the bottom structural stiffening element for the front axle that sits below the engine, and the drain plug is for the engine oil pan.

Agreed, and it’s hard to see to what extent the shield is providing good protection by extending to the cooler and/or being lower than the cooler.

I just love the undercarriage of the G8X and needed an excuse to get the picture in

I suspect in practicality the oil cooler is sufficiently protected. I know some people had the engine oil system damaged on the F8X and complained about fragile design. However I bottomed out my F80 on several occasions also hit a few nasty pieces of debris traveling underneath (including a bouncing manhole cover that a Lexus LC sucked up right of the ground in front of me) where I was sure damage occurred based on impact and noises. I took it in to the dealer each time for inspection of undercarriage and suspension geometry + wheel alignment. Same thing each time “some sctratches but no functional damage”. The F80 is my least favorite M car I owned and 2nd least favorite BMW I’ve owned but damn it’s robust.

You want Motorsport? The oil cooler at the front bottom leading edge is one of the most efficient ways to get cooling while still leaving real estate in front of the grill for... more cooling.

Exhibit A. Check out the latest AMG GT Black Series. Same placement. Nothing new here. It's engineering driving design; common front engined race car design.

You take the good with the bad and in my books, I wouldn't change a thing. M team didn't.

You can see better from this picture that the oil cooler is completely exposed, just as on the F8X, which makes sense to maximize airflow.

The G8X undercarriage is not that different to the F8X one...

If it’s the same/similar that’s perfect. Very robust cooling and adequately protected in practicality. I don’t have numbers on people who have cracked theirs but from my own 7 years of hard use and abuse all year around it’s not an issue.

It’s similar looking but maybe it’s that picture where everything looks neater and beefier. As mentioned the F80 is one heck of a robust car underneath so similar is good

Same here, did well over 100 track days with my M4 jumping curbs, used it as 4-season daily driver hitting packed snow and ice chunks in winter, never had an issue with the cooler. I have no doubts the G8X will be at just as stout.

Why is the F80 your least favorite M; how/why do you expect the G80 to be different?

Sure it really is cool to listen to the aero guys.

Note how they cover up the atrocity of a grill.

Absolutely disgraceful grill. The front end designers, where they watching the predator too much? Or did they take inspiration from the lexus.
