Yep, saw a 420i at the dealer, and in person it's quite noticeable through the grill
Grill design here will probably make it more obvious.

But whatever, no point worrying about it here, rest of the car is starting to grow on me. Still just not liking the size increase and lack of DCT...

“Good eye, flashed just for a second”

Very cool. Hopefully production slots for the AWD cars will be cleared sooner than expected.

Preferable to have these threads in the main forum section, rather than in this "photos, videos, builds" section since they are dealing with the main aspects of the G8X?

I can watch these videos all day. Seeing the thoughtfulness BMW puts into their designs is extremely high and competitive.

Almost as if they saying, you see what we doing for y'all, don't say we don't look out for you guys. It's almost trustworthy. Like I can rely on them to take care of all the little things.

I really like and appreciate that.

All these cooling systems I take for granted because on the F8X they just work... personally never had an issue with an overheating something.

That said definitely overcooked the brakes before so seeing those brake ducts make me very happy. Much needed and very welcome addition!

Me likey!

There is a special chunk of grass at ACS that appreciates this statement.

Liking the series of vids, the fact that BMW are showing us technical aspects of the G8x takes the focus off the exterior design and we can really appreciate the improvements over the F8x.

The logical engineering function seems to prescribe the layout for the kidney grills to be situated above the structural brace and a separate lower air intake with mesh (debris guard) to protect the oil cooler - just like BMWs have been designed for decades.

This seems to be supportive evidence that the new incongruent and oversized vertical grilles were purely an aesthetic play - making them even more cringeworthy.
Crash protection mandates this and was also seen on early prototypes quite a while ago.

Audi, Lexus etc also have huge grilles (as their design language). Audi also used to have a small grille above the crash structure, but changed their design. I don't think many Audi customers want the old design back, even though the big grille is there purely for design purposes.
When Audi (and Lexus) introduced their large grilles it was met with the same reactions as BMW is facing now. Perhaps history repeats itselves in this case also...

BMW have done the same on previous generations as well. The kidneys on the E21, E30, E28 and E34 for instance was just a design element of the grille, not needed for cooling purposes (they could actually had better air flow without the kidney surround blanking off part of the grille opening).

Yes, it's a design decision. But isn't design an important feature, even of a M-car?

I think this stems from the false belief many had that the big grill was to improve cooling. With this video, it proves it was clearly not the case. One could even argue that the new design actually allows less airflow compared to the F8X when seen with the bumper off.

Yes, design aesthetics have always been an important element of ///M cars. Elegance and engineering purpose have always been attractive to me. But it has to be said, the G8X is definitely controversial in terms of looks, even more so when it cannot be justified by technical reasons.

To be honest, save for the brake cooling ducts, I have not seen much “improvement” over the F8X to be demonstrated in any of these videos thus far...

What about the extra bracing & wheel/tire setup?

Having the front bumper removed by a BMW engineer, this is obviously and factually no longer a viable justification.
I’m hoping there will is an episode dedicated to the aero dynamics of the car. If so there could potentially be more to the grill’s shape than just aesthetics. Personally I don’t much care why they went this grill style though. However I’m interested in the science and results from the aero, so here’s for hoping we get an episode for it.

And then another episode about the AWD tuning and results specific to the G8X

We have not seen much details of the G8X bracing, but from what I gather, the F8X bracing seems just as exhaustive if not more so. Further, effort was put to make the F8X stiffening elements lightweight.

As for the tires, same size rear and 10mm wider fronts as the CP/CS/GTS F8X . Nothing dramatic and mostly to offset the added front weight bias IMO. The 0.5" wider wheels are welcome though.

The videos do describe what was done to the G8X, but they do not necessarily mean improvements over the F8X. More often than not, they describe what they did to the G2X chassis to make it an ///M. For instance, the cooling system seems very similar to the one on the F8X, there's no obvious "improvement".
