AWD that I can turn off. That's why I went with an F90, best of both worlds.

Assuming the G8x AWD will have a similar set up, or no?

As far as we know, exactly the same system but likely tuned slightly different.

Excellent. Now we just need them to bring the G81 here!

RWD. I like the handling characteristics better and the lighter weight is a big plus too.

Regarding the winter, my old F80 held up to CT snow and ice easily. Just get some really good, meaty snow tires and you'll be fine with rwd.

I agree. I used to have an E46ZHP and with snow tires in the snow, it was very capable. Something about RWD

Still I am wondering about your preferences regarding RWD vs AWD? My head is still thinking should I have waited for the AWD?

1) Are the expected differences RWD vs AWD that much in daily driving in warm weather or what is your experience with the previous F82 RWD?

2) Is the added traction and expected better performance more in the 0-100km/h area or also in the 80-120km/h, 100-200km/h area, which I would think is the more frequent use case in daily driving?

3) I know we have no real performance data as of today but whats your estimation comparing the two drivetrains and how do previous F82 drivers look at the drivetrain question?

I will do a short term lease so the choice of RWD/AWD is not that important to maybe buying the car. Still wanted to know what your drivetrain choice looks like with the facts we currently have...

Thanks for your feedback & happy holidays...!!
Honestly the only reason I'm upgrading from an f80 to a G80 is to get the AWD. I have a tune and am catless, and basically the car can't accelerate at all below 40 mph. Boost just cuts immediately, and my previous Audi S4 with 150 less hp would crush it off the line. I'm excited to finally have a 600+ whp M3 (bolt ons) that can actually accelerate like a 600 whp car!

All I know for sure is from my experience driving my RWD M340i… Great car, but with 255 rears on PS4S, the engine management wants to cut torque in the first two gears to maintain traction and stability and my car is significantly down on power by comparison. Very rarely do I get cleanly off the line when I push it from a stop and sometimes even rev hangs on the 1-2 shift. The car just doesn’t have enough tire for the job. Yes, 285 is a much wider tire but not that much wider when you’re adding another 120hp in comp spec! So my best guess is the AWD will be much faster in gears 1, 2, 3 because the ecu won’t limit the torque as much. If you’re daily driving the thing, you’ll be spending a lot of time in those first three gears. If I went with RWD, I’d be looking for 305s to put in the back.

Waiting for AWD, I love it in my current 2020 M340. Front end feels more secure in corners near limit.

Too many combos when you add in the manual. I'd lean RWD manual as it keeps the car at mid-70s. I also like that they raised the level of the shift knob compared to the F80. Hopefully BMW addressed the terrible traction on the RWD version.

Totally agree, there is this miss conception that AWD is for winter driving but the greater benefit is the added agility near the limit. Those that keep thinking that RWD is more fun wait till they try the AWD on the track. I just got a 2021 M340xi with the cooling pkg and can't wait to take it to the track. If after the G80 reviews come out and it turns out that is not much more superior to the F80 I will keep my M340 for a while before upgrading to the G80 if not I will trade it next year for the AWD G80.

I see lots of post referring to the added weight of the AWD, what 105 lbs is going to make that much difference not sure most will notice the difference.

Sweet let us know how it goes at the track. Although it is not what I would consider a track car, more of a GT car

It's not even 105. According to bmwblog.com:

The G80 Base model with manual is 3,924 lbs
The G80 Competition model with automatic is 3,979 lbs

The 55-lb difference is negligible.

And those 105 lbs are located at the bottom of the car and longitudinally centered. They are forward from the COG but behind the front axle. You’d be hard pressed to notice any significant impact in a 3800 lbs - 500 hp car. The added traction in all conditions should surely make up for it in average speed around a track.

Total cliche but I think track, weather, DD and or little bit of both if desired.

My e92 M3 is decent on track and street, the power it makes stock isn't going to burn the rubber off rear tires all the time like my Z without any traction control or nannies from the factory. I feel like once you go FI on RWD, you are completely delusional to think you are getting everything out of that kind of power with so much torque throughout the power band. Sure you can feather the throttle and slide and steer your out of it if you're skilled driver or drifter but on the street, it's meaning less and for some unsafe, I.e. "Mustang" drivers. Especially true if you turn off traction control totally or partially. Hoon mode isn't for your average driver.

IMO RWD high powered cars are great on straight line highway rolls if you have dry pavement. Or if you enjoy a lot of drama when you take off. It can be embarrassing too when a Golf R spanks you off the line in your brand new high powered turbo car. My Audi rs5 honestly has not lost a race from the dig with a RWD car. It's laughable when a hellcat is smoking next to me trying to catch up. And people would argue well on racing slicks and wider tires blah blah. Even pros spin wheels when you're making significant power.

At the end of the day, AWD car for me is a daily that fits my style, my climate, my personality. When I was in California, I never ever thought about AWD. Even my SUV was FWD. lol. And I would imagine I'd get the G80 M3 Xdrive for the same reasons as my RS5. I actually might trade my rs5 in for that when it comes out as a new daily since BMWs seem to be more enthusiast friendly when it comes to mods period.
How do you like the RS5? I heard when it first came out of it was completely rubbish, just a soulless car, but that the more recent years have fixed it a bit. Audi as a brand was underinvested in for years, but they seem to have fixed some of that in the last few years

I agree, our G20 M340 are not track ready cars like the M3, especially considering the possibility for heat soak, which the cooling pkg will mitigate some what. However, the M340 does have a very good suspension and powerful brakes (also part of the cooling pkg) which should still provide for a fun track day experience.

AWD vs RWD

I have allocation (supposedly) for an AWD M3 but am considering changing to a RWD. As someone who lives in the NE where it snows 2-6 times per year having AWD isn't really the end all be all in that regard.

So, I guess my question is outside of the poor weather grip improvements am I missing out on anything else?

I care more about track handling then I do about my 0-60 times.

I would wait for the AWD reviews before deciding. You could be missing out on serious speed advantages in all conditions including a dry track. Handling “feel” could be negatively impacted or hardly noticeable.

Way too risky to guess at this point if you care about the difference. On the other hand if the RWD ticks all your boxes and you don’t care if the AWD will outperform it with little to no disadvantages well then I see no harm in swapping now.

I never had an AWD M car but I will wait, AWD is IMO this generation’s biggest new feature and I want it unless it’s really detrimental to the handling dynamics.
