Question M3/M4 6MT clutch life

Hi folks,

I recently got my first ever 6MT M car - G82 M4.

How long did your last generation M3/M4 clutch last? I just want to have an idea about when to replace the clutch.

Side note: I had a WRX STI in the past but it only lasted 8,000 miles with a brand new OEM clutch (yes I drove aggressively).

Thanks.

The clutches used in M cars last forever. Our E46 had 180k miles, many of those double-use at the track, and was still on the original clutch.

In the E9X and F8X gen the 6MTs with the stock clutch hold up to around 650ftlb, so quite a bit.

In my F82, I bought the service plan that replaces brakes and the clutch if they're worn within 3 years/36k miles (if I remember correctly). I'm a couple years past that and haven't come close to needing the clutch replaced.

Driving aggressively doesn’t wear out a clutch. Driving incorrectly does.

I’ve gone 100k miles in several manual BMWs before selling/trading in. Clutch never needed replaced.

There’s no way you’d only get 8K out of an OEM clutch on a stock STI unless you were driving it incorrectly. (I owned a 2009 STI and raced it constantly on autoX, drag strip, lapping with Cobb stage 2 and the clutch had absolutely zero issues)

Agreed with others. If your STI clutch only lasted 8k it's likely improper usage and likely you'll see premature clutch wear in any car. Driven properly, even an aggressively driven car should last 60k plus. Only caveat is if you are launching hard on sticky tires you will see premature failure even if proper launching.

Unfortunately I sold the car before I burnt the clutch flat.

But overall, it was solid for 22,000+ miles in a few months.
