The only way I would opt for M Drive is if you can use the 10 stage MDM in RWD mode of an xDrive car. TBD but unlikely I suppose.

I agree nothing beats the experience of driving stick shift in general but newer cars are designed based on automatics and the overall performance (power band, shift speed, gas mileage etc.) is optimized based on the auto transmission.

When I had my Z4M Coupe (S54) it was stick obviously and I loved it. Then I test drove a stick E90 M3 and the car felt too big/bulky/heavy to be stick to the extent that it didn't feel much fun to me. With cars getting bigger & heavier with more electronics & technology I feel stick shift is not the perfect match anymore.

I would still buy a stick shift car in the future for sure but not a brand new one. I keep thinking of a street legal Exocet project car for street & track fun. Now that'll be raw, light & connected enough were stick shift is a must for the full experience!
We just proved the first theorem of Bimmerpost....that EVERY thread, if it goes on long enough, becomes nothing more than a 6MT vs. AT argument. My bad lol.

It's a no brainer if you plan to go to the track more than once in your ownership.

The only interesting feature of M drive professional for me is the 10-stage traction control.

I agree it appears to be the only useful feature as I don't care about the "drift analyzer" gimmick and the "track mode" that does nothing to the driving dynamics.

i wish you could configure the Sport/Track gauge cluster in normal Road mode instead of the backwards G2X gauge. But from the way it was explained in the video, doesn't seem like you could configure it as such?

Correct. Same is true for the M8 and LCI M5 currently.

They need to load up your settings automatically when you log into the new car. Sounds crazy but it's probably not that far away.
First thing you are encouraged to do when taking delivery of a iDrive 7 BMW is to log into your connected drive account as your vehicle settings will transfer to an other BMW. The settings of my current '21 F95 ZCP will carry over to my future G83, including the M1 and M2 buttons (as I was informed), expect for seating positions.

Things are moving fast - both our cars are less than two years old (X4 M40i and M2 CS) and don't have this enabled. They're on ID6 I expect.

My question is how does MDM compare to the M Traction Control? Is MDM = M Traction Control level 5? Some other level? Works completely differently?

The point is that they want to sell you what they want and what they can trade better in the future, like diesel engines a few years ago in Europe. If you showed interest in a 320i they would look at you like this and push you to buy a 320d even if you did 8000km/year.

I am lost on my first drive in the G80... So I If I am in M1 or M2 configured modes and then I click the M-mode button set to "road" does override the M1/M2 mode? Cause the settings in the gage cluster look to still show as the M1/M2 settings.

As I understand it, the M-mode button and M1/2 buttons do different things. M-mode disables driver safety features like active cruise control and lane keep assist, etc. It also gives you a nicer heads up display with the RPMs. But I don't think it does anything to the settings like suspension, braking, transmission, etc. Those are set by going through the settings menu, and can be stored into M1 and M2 buttons for quick access. So one does not override the other. I've confirmed this on my G80 yesterday...

Only thing that could be useful is the 10 stage Traction control, it's added safety for someone who is beginning at driving on track but I guess for someone like me with a bit more experience you end up putting everything off after a few laps.

If someone feels totally usage driving his M car with everything off maybe he should begin with a less potent/powerful car anyways..
