G83 M4 Convertible - Patent Designs filed by BMW at WIPO

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
G83 M4 Convertible designs surfaced last month on the public WIPO website (public information - no leak).

See here and here.

Design number: 008202865-0003 | Filing date: Oct 14, 2020 | Publication Date: Dec 11, 2020.

In general, to browse through countless registered BMW designs: in the public Global Design Database click on the "Names" tab, type "bayerische" in the "Holder" section + click "search" (4,400+ results).

For Porsche, Audi or Mercedes designs: type "Porsche", "Audi" or "Daimler" in the "Holder" section.

To filter only car designs, add the following: in the "Design" tab, "Description" section, type "toy" (a reference to "Indication of products: Motor vehicle, toy and/or replica").

Convertible take rates are so low these days that it's surprising to see companies still offer the option.

Thanks Artemis. I think these same images were also posted last month to the official G83 thread:

Well, the F23 2er will be the last in its lineage, and both the G29 Z4 and G14 8er are rumored to be the last in theirs as well. That would leave just the 4er/M4 convertibles by the latter half of the decade which might be sustainable.

It's probably similar proportions to the G80 but a bit too much overhang...

This is a pretty basic drawing. It doesn't look anything like the G82... not nearly as aggressive. I would expect the final car to look a lot more like the G82. I'll be placing my order (with AWD) as soon as it's available. I have a 430i x-drive convertible and absolutely love it. Living in Chicago, I get the best of both worlds... top down for the summer, AWD for the winter. Plus it's one of the few convertibles where my teenage kids can also fit in the backseat when necessary, and all 3 are about 6'2".

Just like all G83 mules, the rear overhang get exaggerated by the verts shorter roofline and make it look rather atrocious from the side. Hopefully IRL it is better looking.

Yes, naturally the actual product will differ from this regulatory cartoon in the same ways the final G82 product looks different from its regulatory cartoon.

What we know is that there have been no G86 test mules and there is no indication from trusted inside sources who expose products well in advance of their existence being made public that a G86 is in the works.

That said, the G81 snuck up on just about everyone, and so too could a G86, at least theoretically. Practically speaking, with the high performance 523hp "i4 M" coming as a new flagship (and perhaps even a model above that at some point), the chances for an M4 Gran Coupe seem less likely now than ever.

Just imagine the curb weight of a G83.

I don't mind at all the low take rate, easier to get an allocation and low pricing. Patiently waiting to place my P1 order upon the official reveal.

It doesn't actually begin production until July, so we've got a few months yet.

That is very likely to be timed with the G20/G21/G80 LCI in July 2022 in regions where it will be sold (not in North America).
