Hello All, just went through a software update and the steps were as follows

1. Download the latest version using the BMW app on your phone
2. Transfer the downloaded files to your BMW, this only happens while driving and phone connected to your car via Bluetooth
3. BMW than prepares the files for the software upgrade, this step only happens in the background while driving
4. Once step 3 is completed you are ready to install the upgrade when engine is stopped and car is parked.

Yes, those are the steps once your car picks up the OTA update. That is the piece I think you may be missing and why a lot of us are 2 updates behind even on 24’s.

FYI you don't actually have to drive for steps 2 and 3. They just tell people so they don't think you can't use the car. But you can sit in the car and have it complete without driving.

Yeah I became aware this message on the app however after normal driving it did not pop up and I was able to start the upgrade as soon as I parked.

Thank you, strange though when I stopped the step 2 and definitely 3 paused and did not restart until I drove or maybe I was not patient

I've never had that actually take effect on my car. I've had, I think, three or four major updates since I got the car in March of '21 and it's installed as soon as the car was tucked back into the garage.

Still not sure why mine won't update after numerous cell phone/app downloads.
It just won't start transferring over to the vehicle.

Delete your phone from the car’s device list than delete the BMW app on your phone.
Restart the phone and Reinstall App on the phone reconnect to your car. Make sure your are signed in your app with your BMW login ID

Restart the steps, download update on your phone while connected to your home WiFi.

Debatable but you have to be driving for the files to transfer from your phone to the car. You have to initiate this step once download is complete and phone is connected to the car.

All this fails call BMW Genius

I've tried deselecting/reselecting the software update option in iD7, but haven't tried completely deleting and reinstalling the app.

Noticeable change for me is availability of a retro gauge cluster.

Anyone else going to 7/2023 notice sport + (D3) trans mode is actually enjoyable on regular streets now?

In my 24’ M4, prior to the update was fun but would throw the hell out of you letting off WOT closer to redline and was just overall jerky. Now seems to be much smoother or upshift instantly to where I don’t find myself ever going into Sport (D2) anymore. I used to always switch between D2/3 depending on the road

Are these ID software updates also able to make changes to Engine & Transmission ECU?

Honestly not 100% they can however I’d imagine they definitely should be able to if they wanted with how intricate BMW’s electronics are.
The only related example that’s confirmed is not having to wait 2 seconds on M buttons to disable traction although that’s still just an ID thing.

It could just be placebo but I swear I noticed a difference first WOT after

Making a post here because I just fought with iPhone/CarPlay/Hotspot for like 40 mins after finishing the update today.

IN-CAR WIFI/PERSONAL HOTSPOT (AND AS A RESULT, CARPLAY) WILL NOT WORK FOR THE FIRST TRIP AFTER THE UPDATE IS COMPLETE. I didn't see this indicated anywhere throughout the update process but it's possible I missed it.

After hard restarting iDrive multiple times, turning the car on/off, removing/re-adding my phone, restarting my phone, etc a million times, I finally said screw it and just left to do other stuff for a little while. Then when I came back and started the car, in-car WiFi started right up, and CarPlay connected no problem.

My CarPlay worked immediately after updating a couple nights ago...lol

It's been confirmed that we won't be getting iD8.5 (at least the new UI). The OS will be updated to iD8.5 base code, but nothing about the usability or functionality of our cars will change.
